By Buzz Baty CORONA,CALlF., March 18 - From the way Brad Lackey is riding these days, it would appear that he is rapidly getting in shape to do battle in the coming INTER·AMA and TRANS·Al\IA and any other big money events. After sweeping the field last week in the Pacific·Al\IA trials, Brad devaststed the competition here today, winning the 250 and 500 Expert classes with his CZ's. The races in both events were for the second spot, as Rex Staten and Bob Hershey were also riding 250 and 500 Expert on CZ's. The final order in both was the same.Lackey-Staten-Hershey. In all six motos for the two classes, Rex and Bob would race wheel to wheel behind a fast disappearing Lackey. Although it could have been dull racing, Brad kept it from being dull by doing little things, like 'c o m ing over the infield jump, landing on his rear wheel, and then holding a wheel stand all the way down the hill and into the tum for the finish line. As he completed the 180-degree sweeper, he would pick up the front end and wheelie the length of the front straight, all to the delight of the fine grandstand crowd. Ken Zahrt came close Friday night at Lions, running second to Dave Rodgers, but today was Ken's day as he rang the gong for the first OA. beating out Bruce :>1cDougal by 31 points. 1L was another 125 Expert, knock down drag 'em out affair, with Shane McDonald, Bultaco mounted following :>1cDougal's Penton and Zahrts Bultaco, as Shane notched third. :>IcDougal. :>lcDonald? I thought yesterday was SI. Patrick's Day. They do everything within their power to please the riders and make the track a good one. Last week two riders wen: seriously injured in a multi rider pile-up over the infield humps. Now this H T D SER GREETS DM' SHOES had not a thing to do with the track itself, it was a case of too much gas on the part of the riders. But today the humps have been given a very gentle approach . So even if the warriors get to writing checks that their ability isn't up to cashing, Corona Raceway management has made the track more forgiving. By Dave Brown Photos by Bob Rasmussen APPLE VALLEY, CAL., March 5,1972 - Another one of those fantastic desert days greeted 289 riders for the regular Deadman's Point go-round. The day went slower than usual, and only two motos were run. However. the second moto was run eight laps for the Juniors and 10 ~~ ~r the S=in~ The lengthened race combined with the first hot day of summer left many riders exhausted. Morgan Malocco (Yam) and Neal Wyckoff (Yam) again tied for the 100 Intermediate win. These two pulled the same shot last month. The 125 Intermediate win again went to Suzuki mounted Tracy Walters as he did his thing on the whole class, as usual. Tracy looks like a good bet for Senior status but that will probably only change the class he wins. Jim Hoover came out with intentions of taking home a couple of Senior wins, but his first try was thwarted when he killed it in a slow tum and finally got started about two-third of a lap behind. This gave Bob Hershey all the breathing room he needed as he took his CZ to a wire to wire win. Moto two of the 500 Sen ior saw Hoover kill his CZ again in the same spot but he got it going again to maintain his win for a second overall behind Hershey. Jim was not to be denied as he trounced the 250 Senior class on his other CZ. The next race will be the first weekend of April and Deadman's will then be returning to racing on the first and third Sundays. I understand there will be an Easter Sunrise Service at the "Point". There will be no more sign-ups after 9:30. Be early. (Results on page 36) M " '" '" 0.. N .... en - ::;: '" ~ w Z W ..J U >- U
