Cranke Gets 2 .in Marys ville By David McElyea Photo b y D.M./Action Photo MARYSVILLE, CAL., Feb. 27, 1972More than 200 riders turned out for the Yuba-Sutter Motorcycle Club's first motocross o f the 1972 season. They w e re greeted by bright sunshine, spring-like temperature and smiling faces. There were more reasons than one fo r th e smiles, it had rained for five days before the race, and th e weatherman had predicted mo re of the same for th e 27th. The cl ub had laid out one of their usual t o ugh natural terrain courses. It h ad a little o f everyth ing in it : sand, mud, slic k clay an d some of th e wil dest jumps yo u ever saw. The referee elimin at ed one 30 0-foo t long sectio n of the course th at was like a trials cou rse; ver y t ricky an d so slic k it was impossible t o wal k o n. Most of th e Amateur and Expert rid ers and all th e sp ectators were dis appointed, but it did sav e a lot . of h id e and maybe so me bro ken b ones. T here w ere only th ree riders ou t o f 20 0 .ab le to win all three motos for a clean sw eep . One o f th em did it in tw o classes, Carl Cr anke (Pen, CZ) w on th e 125 and 250 Expert classes . . . Ther e were only six riders in th e Open Expert class but it co uld n 't hav e been more exciting if there had been sixty. In th e first moto Allen Yarrow (Mai) had it sa cked up until the last 30 fee t. At that point the lead changed three times, and before we knew what had happened Lonnie Forman took the checkered flag with Robert Harshburger _ not mo re ' than four inches behind him. Yarrow fell down just in front of the flag man, got u p , and pushed across for a third. This race seemed to inspire the rest .o f the riders because there .were many finishes like this in other classes. When the rubber band snapped for the second round of the Open Expert class, it was hard to believe what we saw: Almost a dead heat into and out o f the first turn. In the first lap the lead changed eight times! Ya rrow was ahead when they went by followed closely by Forman , Harshburger and Larry Muldock (Suz) . The lead changed three or four times in the next two laps. As they came aro und the last turn and down the las t straight away Harshburger shot past both Foreman and Yarro w ._and into the lead, Forman wasn't h aving that so he go t a big handful of t h ro ttle and h u ng o n. He go t b y Yarro w , and then he cam e alo ng sid e o f Harsh burger. At t he flag it was Fo rman by th e wid th of a nob o n his fro nt t ire . Th e th ird mo to wa s a re p lay of the first tw o. I must say I was co m p letely ex hausted just watchin g. In th e Open Amateur class Mik e Ham m el (CZ ) took the first mota over when Bu zz Pr esser (C Z) fell down ea rly and co u ld n't ca tc h up. Bu z came b ack in the second and third for w ins. Hammel t ook tw o seco nds and a firs t to come up with en ough points to edge o u t Buz for first place brass. The o nly consistent rider in the Open Novice class was Bob Harvey (Hus). H e to ok two firsts and a second t o take first place brass. Rick Morray came up second with one second and two fifths. The 125 Experts ran with the Amateurs. Carl Cranke (Pen) went to an easy win after the only competition he had , Lonnie Forman, lost control of his Carahela on the first turn and went down taking Rick Greeves (Yam) with h im. In a display of good sportsmans hip, Foreman wouldn't continue un til Geeves was able to do the ~ Vertical 9" t o 14 " - horizon ta ll y 6 lJ 2" t ol OI/:l" • 24" Uftlng b ar kee ps b i ke fr o m lipping, large fool p ad s f o r wor king In dl r:t.
