PFUTZ FALLS ON AXLE; CANNADY WINS ANOTHER By Ali ce Rhea NORT H OF RED ROCK CANYON, CAL., March 12 , I 972--Victors M.C . put o n ' a race th at was d escribed b y th e rid er s as "tricky," "a real riders' co urse ," " fun" a nd " ro ugh and t ough." Eigh t hundred th irteen desert rats lin ed up to ride in some of the most b eautiful w eat h er w e've seen this y ear. The fun wa s only sligh tly marred b y the BLM , ca tt leme n and local land o w ners wh o co nverged . on Victors M.C. last Thursday a nd rearranged the course, ma king their 90 mile Hare and Hound in to a 90 mile Hare Scrambles, but nobody re ally seeme d to mind too much. Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bu l) had it all to himself until the second downhill when Gene Cannady (Yam ) tippy- toed around h im. They held it like that until about 300 yards from the finish. Gene went on to take first overall, but Pfutz shattered his front axle, and it looked like he might just give it up right there. But Pfutz pulled his face out of the dirt, picked up his bike and still had time to plow across the line second overall and first 250 Expert. Whitey Martino (Hus) is really getting back with the program, finishing third overall today. He was followed by Mike Patrick (Yam) and Bob Kaskel, Bill Friant (Puch) was also right in d eser t racing) LeMans start toda y. When th e ban ne r was rais ed all the riders le ft th eir b ikes an d walked ac ross th e road b eh ind t he startin g lin e. A Vi ct ors patrolman made su re all rid ers we re across t he road, sign aled the b anner truck, the b anner dropped a nd th e racers sprin ted across the ro ad . leap ed o n the ir bikes and ch arged o ff toward th e n ow- famous OCMC banner-bomb. I am really h appy to report that I wasn't blown o ff th e roads b y th e usu al p it racers this week-end. Victors put a price on their heads... th ey offered rewards for their cap ture, living or dead . He y, I invite all pit racers to buzz my camper next week-end. I'm bringing 10 and Ll-vear-o ld neighbor boys and th ey are practicing chucking co k e battles. Tee-hee, Victors M.C ., that was super-ne at race. I go t o ne complaint, though. I'm sunburned. I can 't begin to thank all the people who assisted me, but I do want to thank Forrest and Mark Wright. I really appreciate your help. Listen, guys. Tell your wives and girlfriends that it is really hot out here and if they want a head start on the tan they just have to dig those hot-pants and bikinis out of the back of the closet. Bakken, who used to be a super-fast Novice, is now a fast Amateur. A .C. rode hi , P"'ky in for first 55 Amateur spot to rlav, Dick Harris (Hus) w as first 250 Amateur and Jeff Heininger (Peu) took the honor of first division 11 Amateur. The first Novice was No . 1234x (ho nest!} Bob VanS tee (Bul) followed by Jay Fiala (Bul) and Steve Subith (Yam). My favorite Novice, mounted on a new Yamaha 360. did me proud today, finishing fourth Novice and first 500 Novice. Oh, yeah. his name is Dale Rhea. First Division 11 Lightweight Novice was Robert Morrison (Pen). Desert Daisy Sharon Rosenauer (Ric) was first girl again today...she has done that so much lately that I don't think anybody would believe me if I said she didn't win it one Sunday. Over in the other finish area the Trail Novices were completing their one loop. In order of appearance they were: Paul Rizzo (Hod). George Berg (H.D .), Bob rutten (Hod), Darrell Quick (Hon) and C.T. Wilson (Ric) . First girl Trail Novice was Judy Lovell (Ric). Out by the b anner-bomb earlier today w e all pointed and sh o u ted "Hey , look at th at little kid !" Well , that little kid was Mast er Links' IO-ye ar- old Ken ny Pin tus. Kenny go t a Steens "B obtail" Hodaka for Christmas and rode hi s first race today. He d idn't d o too b ad eithe r...No . 8 4 Trail Novice. Nice goi ng , Ken. In spite o f all t he help I h ad today I still managed to ign ore the Trail Amateurs.
