McCool & Briggs Double at Adelanto Slider As they casually unload, I even more casually check out the bike. No one is going to catch me napping. Well, what they unloaded was the darndest thing I ever saw . The right hand case bulged out two or three inches more than it should, but it looked like a Maico. "Hey! What you got there?" I asked. uA Maico " answered Ron. "What size?" "Well, 01' buddy, it's a 125 and it's fast," says Ron. Seems like Jeff Sexton's Track-In-Travel had some pull with Cooper Motors and they got one of the two that Cooper brought to the West Coast. We later learned another dealer in the San Bernadino area managed to capture on from an itinerate racer bringing the total up to three of the little boogers, Rod raced the rotary valve dynamo against the 125 Amateur/Experts in its first ever race. He finished fourth in the ~ 'r~~ =' .---- .. --;..,~-,::p;. -~ ', -.' qualifying heat. He finished second, behind Scott Smith in the Main Event. Might be that the 125 Maico may require some watching. The 500 -0pen Amateur/Expert qualifying heat had to be restarted after three laps. Jay Hunter was attempting to pass another rider in the first sweeper when Jay lost it. He slid off the track at a speed so incredible that a youngster on the mini-bike course below could not even describe it. Removed from the course with a suspected back injury, Jay was later contacted at horne. As his dad put it, "He's a tough kid. He will be back to work Monday," I t was announced today that, contrary to current advertising, all future races at Adelanto will be of the smooth scrambles type with the standard big bike speeds of 85 miles per hour down the straigh t, (Results on page 36) ",. McCool out rode the 125 Novices on his Yamaha and then jumped into the 500 Novice class on one of those ill-handling 400 Suzukis and suprised the Maico riders with an excellent view of his silencer and rear wheel. Briggs, who has been terrorizing the 100 class 'fith his super tun e d Kawaski, won the Amateur/Expert class and then went on to trounce the 250 Amateurs on a fast Bultaco. Charles Soderstrom showed up with two Bultacos but had a little trouble with the slick sections of the course. Charley won the 200 Combined class but didn't fare too well against the 250 Experts. Mike Myers rode his old 250 Yamaha and was Bultacoed to death by John Sprague and Doug Mason. Not taking anything away from Mike, he rode well ....m _ _ ;.r· . ~ ---_ .. _ ---_ .. _--------- - but didn't have the horses. Scott Smith tried for another double today but had some more of that luck which usually befalls me. He won the 125 Amateur/Expert class and looked like he was going to take the 500 Open Amateur/Expert. He won the qualifying heat with a pipe which looked like it was about ready to let loose. Scott's dad showed grave concern when the damage was discovered but it was too close to Main Event time to do anything about it . The flag dropped and Scott made it to the sweeper. Ploop, a dead engine. Bad pipe, you say? No, a fouled plug. First thing this morning, Ron Sexton drove in with a big grin and a red Maico in his van. No big thing, since Ron sells thethings. In addition, his son Jeff rides a red one and red is his favorite color. Anyway, we catch Rod Sexton being signed up for the I25cc class . "Where is your I25er?" we asked, "In the truck" says he. We look, but there isn't anything in there but that red Maico. Well, I figure that he is shining me on and start to forget about it. ,~,~"'A("" .. ""J. "'Ii ·1_ . )$ ..
