Scramblers Hold Wipe-out By Max Dawson GRAN D J UNCTI O N, CO LO ., Feb. 13 , 19 72 - In today's motocross, held by the Desert Scramblers Motorcycle Club in the desert hills north of Grand Junction, 50 riders competed before a large crowd in excellent weather. Once again, the 250 B class produced two spectacular crashes in the three heats. Search and Rescue Council (SARC) MX personnel in attendance transported o ne injured rider to S t. Mary's Hospital, where he was treated for lacerations and lat er released. Three classes had only one or two finishers, as the fast pace and crowded fie ld wiped out about half the field. Competitors and spectators from several West Colorado towns were at the event, with Aspen riders picking up a first, second and third in three of the classes . During the delay, spectators were en t ertained by th e pit rac ers and their fantastic di splay o f nerve and near mis ses. Many of the loc al racers went to Mexico to race. These sam e lo cal racers missed a super-surfaced race track. Some tracks break d own as the day p ro gress es. Not Eastside; the su rtace wen t fro m good to better (although oi l can b e a little messy). Wit h all t he lo cal b o ys in Mexico, o nly 3 0 p eople ra ced, Even with the small t u rno ut, the racing was fir st rat e. The b est race o f t he d ay was th e 25 0cc Combined class in which Mike Masse y (Yam ) and Glen Sc huler (Ya m ) h ad a fantastic duel for clas s domin at ion. Bob Scott, who has b een racing for less t han a year , too k his Yamah as and won b oth the 100 A m/Ex. and 125 Ama teur classes in a clean sweep. Betw een th e end of t h e second mo t os and t he start of the third , th er e was a b uddy mi n i-b ike race. This was co mp rised of two b ig d udes o n o ne small mini-bike, Both have t o rid e ar ound once togeth er .
