Even though your photo caption was cleverly worded, so that some of your newer readers won't get the impression that I'm a "dirty old man" trying to downgrade the sport and industry, I would like to point out that our company belongs to both the American Motorcycle Industry Association and the Motorcycle Industry Council, and that we have actively and ed itorially supported both groups' programs and goals over the years (not overlooking the fact that I served as President of the MIA for three years) . I'm sure that your caption wasn't intended as any type of insult, but did want to go on record in the event some of your readers may have interpreted it as such. BILL BAGNALL Bagnall Publishing Co. NAME WITHHELD ETERNITY To Don and Fred of the IOO's M.C.: I will be eternally grateful to you and your 4·wheel-drive for rescuing my husband from having to spend a cold and hungry nigh t out in the desert Feb. 13. If it h adn't have been for your determination to find those five guys stranded on Checkpoint No.6, I'm sure they would still be there wondering, "Where did everyone go?" CHOP ROUND 3 This letter is in reply to the reply that appeared in the Voice of the West co ncerning my letter that you entit led 'Chop Chop '. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a running b attle in the pages of Cycle News but I feel that I pass on any we might receive... Ed. T I RED OF H EA RING IT! In your issue of 2 {I5, I be came a little ,~ngered at reading "Donna Dons... The grumbling heard isn 't as wide-spread as the article would have one to believe. Spillway is a motocross track, that's right , Moto-X! If everyone wants a smooth track I suggest they get into something like "IT or short track. The action is super fast there too, but the tracks are smooth. At any Moto-X track one would care to visit, I'm sure there would be just as many crashes as at Spillway. It isn't the track that needs to be "slowed", I feel that the riders who are participating in any competitive event need to better rea lize h is ac t ual skills . No matter what new obstacles are p laced on the track, there is going to be those few who go through them faster. After all that's the name of the game Moto-X. Comp etit io n ! R egardless of the ro ughness of th e tra ck - so mehow - t he b est guys still fin ish first. MORE THAN THREE In your February 15, 1972 issue, you state on page 11 that Gary Lunsford "fresh out of the woods" has only just completed his third motocross ride. I have attended many CMC motocrosses and have seen him win at least two events overall. He currently holds an Intermediate status with the CMC but has not ridden for sometime. I think it is u nfair that h e says he has only ridden th ree races to possibly fool Edison Dye kind of guy who punches down a ~ear and blasts through when he gets In a tight spot. He usually won't get involved in a long process of loo king so meth ing . up and then making a phone ca ll, then writing a letter. This takes a lot of effort when he just wants to get it on. I'd be will ing to bet that if you sent all your subscribers a letter to sign and send (including envelope with postage), that less than half would do it. I suggest you stir them up with stronger, but factual propaganda and tell 'em where to write. J IM LANE Torrance, Calif. Our "Where to Write" list will appear next week...Ed. TENNIS, ANYONE? That guy was a real idot for taking the owner to court. I know friends who have broken their fo "Ot or have gone off a 10 foot embankment, but nobody tried to take the owners to court. The place used to be a real bitchin ' place to ride ; we ll I guess that is all over. I hope the owner win s the case or it gets dropped. It o nly took some d umb parent to do such a thing, and maybe in five years or so the riders will ride there again. RICK GRANT Sep ulved a , Calif. have to reply. First off, Iceman as you call yourself, don't you have the guts to use your real name? Are you afraid to let the readers know who you are? Secondly, you say don't knock it until you've tried it. I wouldn't try a chopper for the simple fact that most choppers, with their extended forks, have so much trail that they don't want to turn. T his, alo ng with t he dubious quality of the components use d makes me somewhat lee ry . See my point? I do agree on one point, an occasional article or picture isn't going to hurt. I have been brought up in the mo torcy cle world, so I at least know what I am talking about. I can't believe that motorcycle riding may be "blown off the map." What a bummer! What are teenagers like me going to do on the weekends when we aren't able to go out riding? Go out and playa couple games of tennis? I'm sure! How many kids a re you going to go see playing tennis? Very little, if any. What are we doing to do? Motorcycle riding is the greatest sport in the world and it can't be abolished! DONNA DUNNINGTON Buena Park, Ca lif.
