"Ir.," r ... , • ~ w Z w -' U > U Elsinore MX: By Jerry McNeal ELSINORE, CAL., Feb . 13, 1972 - It was a sunny day at Elsinore Raceway and no one could have asked for a better day for racing. There was a light t um o ut fo r today's race, probably due to the fact that there were no less than five motocross races and two Grands Prix being h eld within a 50-mile radius. Racing got underway shortly after 9 a.m , with the mini bikes. Kevin Brooks, on a Yamaha Mini Enduro, took the lead and held it to the end with Scott Cunningham in hot pursuit. The second lots of competltton, elsewhere moto saw Kevin take the lead again up to the last lap where he lost it to Scott. Going into the third moto, Kevin again took the lead with Scott staying within one bike-length, right up to the finis h. N ext up w ere the I OOcc Beginner and Novice combined. Elvin Cooks, on a Honda, won all three motos for the Novice class. Fourteen-year-old Chris Radtke (Suz) won the IOOcc Beginner class. In the 125 Beginner class, Ifi-year-old Terry Ashton (Yam) won all three motos handily. Second place went to Steve Mansfield after a tremendous NDL battle with Lyn Mattox (DKW). These . two were never mo re than two b ike-lengths apart fo r all th ree motos. In the combined 175, 250, and Open Beginner class, I 5-y ear -old J im Cain (250 Mai) bat tl ed it out with Yamaha-mounted Jo hn Wolf. Wolf dropped to fourth place in th e th ird moto, placing him second overall. Marty Gresham (Yam) took third due to his spectacular rider in the final moto. The largest class of the day was t he 125 Novice. Jim Nutter (Bul) took an early lead in each moto but I 6-y ear-old Tim Holm (Puc) caught him on the second lap and stretched out his lead in moto . "Jack Rabbi t" Jeff eac h Dennings, who's only 12, rode h is Maico to a first place in the Open Novice class. In the 250 Novice class, Mark Nixon (CZ) and Danny Sall both finished with a 1-2·3. The overall winner was Danny, since he finished highest in the last moto. Hard luck rider of the day had to be Stewart Dowd of the Highsider M.C. who threw his chain in both of the last two motos. Due to a very small number of entries, the Expert and .Interm ediates of all classes rode together. Tim Holm, riding h is Gary Nelson tuned Ossa, sped to an easy victory in the first m ot o . In th e second rno to he fell , dro pping hi m to last p lace. He got up and fought b ack up to fo urth at the finis h . J ac k Riggi (Suz) finis he d in first. Jack and his father are the ones who b uild t hose groovy starting gates like the one at Lions Raceway. The third moto was the most exciting of the day. Tommy Cook of the Bushmasters M.C. took an early lead but Ted Metzger soon got a wheel under him and started stretching out a lead . Ho lm moved into second pl ace a nd th ese two pulled out a big lead over the rest of th e pack. Metzger soon t ired and started lo oking over his shoulder. Ho lm was rig ht there to take the lead and the checkered flag. Holm was the overall 250 winner. Cook was the Open class winner with Riggi taking 125 class. The races were over before 3 p.m., giving everyone plenty of time to get home or just go out and play on the scrambles course.
