I 1,1972 A bit of sanity returned to the "beach" tonight with the riders cooling their 'high flying' exuberance of last week which had resu lted in so many broken scooters and pain to the bod. . Tim Hart scored a do uble tonight, taking home the beans and cornbread money for wins in the 250 and 500 classes. Tim is using talent and brains on the big jump instead of a bunch of "brave " and gobs of horsepower. He's getting his wheels on the ground first after the jump, and although he may be passed in the air, his Maico gets the first bike and he's gone. Hart had it all his own way in the 250 class, but it was a real fight with John DeSoto and Rich Thorwaldson in the 500 go. DeSoto won the first mota while that new Expert, Dave o 'Haver• duked it out with Thorwaldson and Hart . Keep a close watch over your shoulders, fel las, this O'Haver is for real. The second round saw DeSnto's rear wheel try to operate with the hub parting company from the spokes and rim, and we all know that the thigh bone golla be connected to t he hip bone to wo rk. John just wal ked away and let it la y. His manner seemed to b e one of, "How dare you do that to me ", as he would stop and look back at the wounded Suzuki Thorwaldson got in for the win with Hart seco nd, sett ing up wh at sho uld have been a real b attle b etween th ese two. Tim an d Ric h started the th ird go almost tied togeth er. As they hit the jump, Tim had a slight lead and was first in the air, but Rich went by him in mid air on the down side wit h Hart cooling the jump. He out gunned Thorwaldson's Suzuki and kept a narrow lead. The exact sa me pattern was followed on the next lap , but as t hey went in to th e rig ht hander ju st after the j ump , Rich threw his chain and Hart Was breezing. Although Rich was a DNF, his firs t and second place finishes in the first two rounds gave him second ove rall w ith Steve Hammer on his Husky in for third. Here 's an im portant note : Lions :'>IX course is open daily, except Friday, ·for practice. Two bucks lets you rid e all day from 9-5; learning the course in the daytime can only help for those Friday night brawls. (Resu lts on page 40) AMXT CONTR IBUTORS J . SHUMWAV A & R. HEIDT, Turlock.
