A nny bring the trus t of th e Mo dern A nny Volunteer Project right in t o the deepest midst o f teen-agers throughou t th e na tion . T he two privates, both SP4 , both 22, are rid in g th eir motorc ycles from one en d o f the nation to another, p lunging in t o t he midst of crowds of h igh schoolers and draft-age youngsters . The two cyclist recru iters are Michael Speegle, son of an Air Force Chief Master Sargent, and Do ug las Reit meyer, son of an IBM comp ut er expert in San Jose, Ca lif. T hey meet the teen-agers head-on and answer t heir many q uestio ns bl u ntl y and fra nkl y , A ct u all y , they are not official recruit er s, b ut free-wheeling public relat io ns me n for the Anny. T hey try to co pe wi th a ll t he rum o rs and do ubts a nd mis- information th at circulates so freely about military life. "Why the mo torcycles?" is a co mmon ques tio n. Both say t hey speak of their p er so nal exper iences in the A nny and that t he military life is not what is often being said about it. As usual the unlimit ed class wa s mo st thrilling. These AA fue l d ragsters o f the hillclimb in g set are awe so me to wa t ch . Seth Dean ab oard Blackie Quiggle's 83 0cc Triumph uncork ed a 12.9 second run for o pe n ers , then turn ed 12.2 a nd finall y est ablish ed a n ew hill re cord at 11.8 sec onds for th e win . O n a 5 10 fo o t hill with a swe eping tum at 12 5 fee t , bumps yo u wouldn 't b elieve , and a cli m b th at is absolu t ely vertical at th e . top. T hat is flying fri end ! S econd pl ace wa s a tie b etween Sam Groves (83 0cc T rium p h) and Tom Allen (83 0cc Triumph). Sam cu t a 12-second-fla t run o n th e t ie-breaker , thus nipping All en wh o ran a te n th slo we r at 12 . I. Groves was b y far th e fastest o n th e top h alf o f the hill. The second ru n h e cres ted th e t op at .wh at see me d like 9 00 mil es an hour and headed straight for th e moo n... His flight last ed abou t 3 0 feet and rea ched an alt it ude o f abo ut six fee t. Sam b ailed off in mid fligh t and neith er bike no r rider broke. The 250 class, alth o ugh not quit e as spectacu lar, was th e b est racing of th e day. The fir st five pl aces were cl ose en ough that if they'd all mad e runs at t he same time , all five wo uld have b een t ouching wi th f irst and second laying o n t op o f each o ther, third and fourt h side by sid e an d fift h waiting in lin e. T he go-round got start ed with th e 10 0 cc p utti ng o n quit e a show. T he go ld was reall y up fo r grabs in th is class. Winner o f th e firs t m o t a , Andy Anderson, threw a chain in the next tw o to b ecome fift h overal l. Win ner of th e second, Ch ris Brong, was a DNF in rna to 3 so the first place go ld went to Kaw asaki rid er Ri cky Langford wh o earned it with a th ird, a fo urt h and a fir st. Su zuki rid er Ro n Beardsley, with a 4 . 2 and 3 , was elat ed with his second p lace . Eleven riders were availa b le for th e 125 Se ni o rs including Inte nnediat e Vic to r Lee on a Kawasaki. Suzuki rider Mik e Davi d re ally had a fight o n his hands today with Larry Greer (Ya m ). Greg Higgins (B ul) and Pento n rider Mike Garrett doing his share to gain an ad van tage.
