RUNYARD AND CRIPPA TOP ACA SHOW By Da vid S w ift CA R LS BAD, CAL., Feb . 6 , 1972 Last y ear y ou co uld n ' t ge t a n yb o dy t o race ACA. The even ts were poorly or ganized ; often cancelled, a nd co m p e ti tio n \\"3.S scarce. Everyo ne was riding eith er th e A CE events . at Indian Du nes or CMC , wh o alternates with ACA on the Saddleback/Carlsbad p endulum. Lat e in 1971 Bill Jones an d J ack Kell took o ver the m oto cross portion of th e ACA cal en dar , allo wing Wes Co ol e y to concentrate o n t he road racing end. In th e past, th e o nly selling p o int t he club was three 2 0 -minu te motes. Wit h a fu ll continge nt or rid er s, h o wever, it takes a b it of efficiency t o d eliver such a sc hed ule t o , say, seve n classes of riders. This is what J o nes an d Kell have t o offer. Ra ces a re no w started at 9 sharp a nd th e lo ng m otos are run off with no time wasted . "This is wh at th ey want so we're a n xio us t o give it to them, says J on es. K ell added, " If yo u want to ma ke it a specta tor's sp o rt yo u're goi ng t o have to le t th eir son out there for awhi le ." It seems to be working. Because of the dedication of Kell and J ones, th e ACA is slowly gaining a loyal following. Track p reparation is given top priority. Here at Carlsbad Raceway the ACA designed their own course rather than use the one the CMC uses on the other side of the dragstrip. They also installed their own sprinkling system. The course is tight and seems to be more fitting for a 250 than a 400 but the riders are quite pleased with it . One Junior rider said, HI ca n ' t ride anything else. Four-lap motos don't make it. The ACA guys aren't out for your money. More people should ride here ." Then he pondered a moment. "But I hope they don ' t. " What he m ean t by the final remark is obvious: In o rd er to deliver a full hour o f riding t o every racer entries w ill have to be limited . If a Junio r class is filled it will b e closed rather t han ano ther divisio n be created. So a word t o the wise is to e nter b y m ail , a nd get it in no la te r t h an tw o days before t he race. .d " LL ~ W Z W ..J U > U tt I Mike R unvard, 2 50 Sen io r winn er . strakes thro ugh t he fast sweeper.
