~ King and Tanner Each Take Two at l).delanto Ed By' D rec h sler ADELAl\lO, CA L., Jan. 30, \972 While you were sitting down in the L.A , basin suffering from a severe case of the Santa Ana winds, we were up on the high desert enjoying some highly competitive Rough Scrambles. Ah ha l What are Rough Scrambles you say. \ could give the bo ok defin ition, but it is worded in su ch a way that it really doesn't make sense. Out here in Adelanto, Rough Scrambles is ac t ua lly high-speed moto cross with speed s from first gear corners t o 80 mph straightaways with banked sweeping turns. Rough Scramb les a t Adelanto is unique to the world. It departs from the normally silky-smooth Scrambles track: riders become so fatigued that it is impossible to maintain a positive grasp on the handlebars before th e five laps are com p let ed . Rumors th at John DeSoto was .t o show proved to be false, b ut John Ri ce showed up wi th a new reed valve in his Pu ch, The valv e, said to add \ .8 horsepower to the littl e dynamo, proved to be effective as Scott Smith had to ride harder to stay in front. John seized in the fi rst moto which caused a mi nor number. John h ad other problems with the course b ut managed to take th ird overall on his 400 Ma ic o with the 500 Experts lat er on in the day. Scott Smith won all motos easily after John R. was o u t. Bob Hosford was out to get Scott also, but Bob lost a piston in practice. His mechanic showed it to me later in the day. It sheared clean at the wrist pin leaving the dome in the cylinder and dropping the ski rt into the crank Case. Mike Myers also had problems in practice. He sheared th e swing arm at the shock moun t. Frantically looking fo r a rid e, he located an eigh t-sp eed Everyone knows tha t Hu sq var na. Hus k ies haven't made it in scrambles for some tim e b ut Mike was willing to try. Res u lts : Mik e got th ird overall with Da n ny Hockie firs t an d Keith Tennis second. M ike rode a Hu sky in its place. second to Danny and Mike, mounted on his mighty Husky, pulled along Bob on the straightaway and simp ly smiled. The look of astonish me nt on Bob's face was wort h the p ric e of admiss ion. Wo nder if K&N is lo o king at the Huskies no w? Keep your eyes on Bryan Kin g. Bryan rides a 100cc Yamah a in the Novice class and has pretty we ll dominated a ll his com p etit io n with repetitive wi ns. Bria n rid es for K&N . T&O h as a rider in the \OOcc Novice class who is so little that his feet will not touch the ground when properly mounted. lIe has help in holding the bike upright at the starts , but once on the course and into the corners, he is on his own , Hard luck c orn er : Jerry Collins , 250 Amateur, seized during practice. He lost a keeper on the crank shaft the prior three weeks and now that he had a stronger keeper manufactured for him he blows the top end. \00 Novice Ron \\' oodruff J u nior broke a crown wh ile run ning third in the Semi. It seems Ro n had a slight attitude problem coming off the jump . Joel Par ker and John Townsend we re fresh off the motocross courses and riding new CZ's to take second and third respectively in th e 250 Amate ur class. They we re outridden by Ca ry Tanner mount ed on a chrome-plated Bultaco reputed t o o nc e belong to Tom White. Cary also j u mp ed up to win the 35 0/5 0 0 Amateur class, only this time he was mounted on a 400 l\laico. Five hundred Earl Parker got himself beat by a Norton and a lIusky. Earl is pretty happ y about it because he beat \9 other 500 I\' ovices. Mike Wilson and Dave Harvey are even happier because of their first and se cond places . Jeff Sexton managed to dominate the 500/0pen Experts again, but as he put it, "\ had to rid e ov er my h ead to catch Rice in that second mo to ". Jeff is also quoted as saying that "If Kir k Red d in g gets mu ch better, \'11 probably b e following hi m ". Kirk, a lso o n a Maico, is a good frie nd of J e ff' s b o th o n and o ff trac k. Kirk managed to eke ou t a second ove ra ll ahead of third p lace Joh n Ric e. (Results on page 32) • ... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * .. Yama ha & .. Trium ph . .. of Fontana . ......
