It probably scared a few riders away from making the short jaunt into the high desert for the Dist. 37 Rough Scrambles point run at 395 Motorcvcle Park. Those who braved 15 MPH freeway speeds at near zero visibility were treated to a beautifully clear day as they crested the Cajon S ummit. They also mi ssed another action pack day which is becoming so typicai of Dist, 37 events these days. The course was essentially the same as used two weeks back, except that yo u broke the course with a hard left at the absolute beginning of the sweeper. Todav 's course had deeper sand than before but it was ridable with K70's attached. New attractions at 395 Cycle Park included an h o nes t t o goodness pit parking area fo r compe titors and a three foot chain link retaining fence running the length of the straightawy for retaining over eager spectators. Scott Smith jumped to the lead of the first i 25 Expert mo to. T&O rider Bob Hosford charged up from a bad stan to pass Scott at the end of the first lap. John Ric e passed Scott in the second lap as Scott seems to be rapidly loosing power fro m a faulty exhaust pipe connection (the pipe jumped out of place) . It now became a race between Hosford and Rice. Scott manages to hang in th er e for a third. Rice was riding theheck o ut of his Pu ch , slowiy catching Hosford, bu t the checkered flag sends the first moto into history with Hosford, Rice and Smith finishing in that order. The second m o to saw Hosford out of it with an apparently seized piston. Scott won and Rice took second. The third moto saw Smith and R ice leadin g the field and Hosford in las t p lace. Bob's crew managed to free the st uck piston with lo ts of oil, but Bob seems to have some other problem . Bob and his machine were class winners. passed three riders in the first lap . Over the jump and into the right hander Bob took out a Bultaco rider to secure a last place. K&:>i Yamaha's Smith won with Rice second and hard charging Ed Steffen third overall . The 250 Expert first moto had Mike Mye rs j ump to the lead with Hosford on his ta il. Hosford tried t o drop a wheel under Mike but couldn't seem to pull it off. It is interesting to note that Hosford 's Yammie is box stock ('72 model) with factory Auto-Lube still in use. After a series of first turn crashes and restarts , Hosford wo n th e second rnoto with Myers ou t wi th a bad coil connection. Hosfo rd learn ed to ride a moto rcycle in Ascot Park's parking lot, being tutored by Tom Rockwood. Bob is 19 years old a nd attending Ha rbor College. With 'o n ly three years of serious competition behind him, his potential seems endless. The third moto saw K&N ' s ~Iyers in the lead, holding it . Hosford fought through the pack to sneak under Mike just before the jump. Myers hung in there to set up Hosford at the Whit e Flag. Bob fell in behind Mike, on ly to recapture the lead at that sam e tu rn before th e jump and went on for an overall win. The 500 Expert moto saw six Maicos and a lone CZ line up .
