David Smith got a dri ve comi ng o ut o f th e righ t-h an d er a nd m oved b y Ela ine over th e jump and into second sp ot. It would seem that David real ly likes th e righ t-hander as, o n th e follow in g lap , h e slipped under Horton, ta ki ng the lead. At th e finis h line, th e order w as David Smith, Horton, Lewis , Dias and Elaine Smith. .Th e 125cc Junior Main saw Craig Alexander take a n immediate lead, with Oren Co ok , Paul Anderson, Homer T aylor, Bu ck H orton an d Steve Craft all in pursuit. Coming through th e sweeper, Anderson slipped around Cook to move into second and then pass Alexander o ver the jump on lap two, to take an undisputed lead. Als o on lap two, T aylor go t aro u nd Cook in tum one and then in the fo llowing sweeper, Craft really got on the gas an d drove around Horton, Cook and Taylor. Now riRht on Alexander's rear wheel, Craft got a bit overanxious an d lost it In the righ t-hander on th e last lap. C e c il Cr owd er and Jim Christophers on came o ff the start and w ent into the firs t t u m sid e b y side in the 250cc Novice Main . Cr owder found a bit of ex tr a tractio n, however , and took the lead co ming out. Christopherso n sta yed righ t b eh ind Crowder un til the las t lap in the sweep er, when he p ick ed up a drive to just edge Cr owder. Tom Shumard was third a t the ch ecker, fo llo wed b y Wayne King, who just n ip ped by Joe R omagno at th e flag. Iconoclas:m At Medford By Mike Starr MEDFORD, ORE., Jan. 9 , 1972 Although this was th e first time silencers were req uired at the Medford Motocross Park, a record 164 riders turned out, thus dispelling th e myth th at motorcyclists love noise. The silencers on all co mp eti n g bikes reduced the noise level from an ear shattering 101-110 decibels to a street-legal whisper of 87-92 decibels. Bill Oliver and last y ear 's third place National AMA Amateur class IT Cham p io n Randy Scott from Salem put in an appearance. Oli ver, ab o ar d a Bultaco, pick ed up sec o nd in the $ 100 purse pro race a nd Scott finished fifth on a ne w Yamaha 360 MX. His was earned the hard way . however, with two bone jarring endos in exactly the same place . Carl Cranke showed the troops wh y he's been ta p p ed to represent Bultaco, His first in the $100 purse pro race puts him even after d efeat a t last May's Southern Or eg on Motocross Championships, and his victory in the 125's puts him one up. (415)534-546 1 94601 I EUREKA, CAL., Jan. 16, 1972 Competition was tremendous t oda y as 135 riders gathered for this third m o to cr o ss of the season. Out of nin e classes of ride rs, six of them won a ll th ree m o to s in their class. In the 10 0cc Novice division, Don Swanson was No. I all the way ; 125 cc Novice, Joh n Maas; 125cc Amateur, J im Johnson; 250cc Amateur/Expert, Brian Lee, Ex pert, Lonnie Fos te r, Amateur; Open Novice, Richard Pawlus . Pawlus wo n all three of his m otos, all right, but no t u nchallenged. Suzuki mounted , Dana Bray gave him a run for his money in th e first m oto. Pawl us started off the race with a good lead an d pushed wa y ahead of the p ack by the third lap. In th e mean time, Bray held third p ositi on a nd was trying hard t o p ick up second from Chuck Lockett. H e di d it. poured it o n and p assed Pa wlus on th e inside o n th e straightaway in the fif th lap. They switched positions again o n th e n ext in sid e c u rve until the six th lap wh en th e y seesa wed th e lead all th e wa y arou nd un til just b efo re th e whit e flag. It lo oked like a sure win for Br ay. On the last curve before the ch ec kered flag, Bray la id it down and left the track clear for Pawlus. In the second moto, Bray pushed ahead at the start , but was stopped in the second lap with bike trouble. Lockett took over first, followed by Richard Miller and Paw lus . Pawlus raced h is way up for the win. Bray, again, started off the third moto b ut was unable to maintain h is position. With more than his share of problems, Bray still ended up with a fourth place troph y. The ra ce for the 125cc Novice trophy was hot, t oo. Ag ain . the winner, John Maas won all three o f his motos with Jim Moffat challe nging all th e wa y. In the sec o nd moto, M offa t was ahead at th e lin e an d Maas t o ok it away from him o n every o ther curve in th e first tw o laps. They w ere side b y side un t il th e st rai gh tawa y in the third lap when Maas lost it a nd fell b ac k. Mo ffa t p ushed wa y ahead with Maas st ill h o lding o n to second posit ion. In th e fifth lap, Maas gra bbed it agai n a nd too k his Husk y t o th e checkered flag. ( Results on p age 28 )
