TUlE fOG GREETS GRIffITH SCRAMBLERS By Bill Spencer OAKDA L E, CAL., Jan. 16, 19 72 Greeted by the fmous tule fog of the Cen tral California Valley, over 200 scram bles riders turned out for the first runnin g of Jerry Griffiths Rodeo Ground s. With track conditions being what th ey are today, this little facility h as al l the potential of being o ne of the great fa cilities with some time a nd work. The riders were all pleased with the track eve n though it needed some atten t ion. Mr. Griffith h as had much background in the ways of motorcycle raci n g and co u ld really make a track for himself with this rodeo grounds. In the Experts ' battle for p oints much crashing was the format fo r the day's operations. In the 125 Expert departme nt, the young Davidson troops cam e out on top on ce again on new Pen tons but not until Mark Musci o put on a great b attle for the win in th e heat. Mark got a poor start and went t o work righ t away. He was passing quite well Kenyon's Frame is Lighter, Anyway Forty-one--year-old E xper t Ray H uff (1 41 hol ds off the tro ops in the 500 Expe rt heat but his mount soured in the Main. Don w on the 10 0 cc Trophy Das h a nd A Main. He went d own wh ile trying h ard fo r the win in th e 2 0 0cc Trophy Dash but d id w in th e 200 A Main a nd th e 25 0 cc Trophy Dash . He wen t down aga in in th e 250cc A Ma in bu t was n o t inj u red . The o nl y inju ry of th e day was to Da le Spen cer (Kaw). Dale wen t dow n in the 100cc practice lap s a nd was t a ken to the hospital wit h a sho u ld er inj ury. Gary Kapus (Y am) w en t d own in h is 250cc heat race but fi n ish ed second to make the B Mai n. He wo n the Band m o ved into the A t o take the w in there also. Gary was d umped in the 360cc Trophy Dash and didn' t finish but cam e bac k to w in the A Mai n . Bill Eh re ns (Kaw) and Kap us had been figh ting it o ut in th e 360cc dash wh en Kapus wen t down. Ehrens was d isq ual ified a nd the wi n went to Chuck J o yner (Kaw) . Due to drop o u ts t he Op en class ra n o nly o ne Main . It was a good, hard riding event w ith Neal Hule t (Ho n) a nd Jim Her schback (Suz) b attling back a nd forth for th e lead. Jim h as been a consisten t w inn er in this class. In th e 500 Expert even t , four-stroke enthusiasts were delighted t o see two BSA MX'e rs lead from st art to finish. First p la ce was captured by R a y Huff, whose throttle hand has been geared to th ese sing les for years. Duane Bowling rode t o a smoo th second p lac e finish , also on a BSA . Roy Winters' Mon tesa led th e brigade in th e 250 Exp er t race from the sta rt, alt h o ugh being p u sh ed by Mark Muscio and Ray H u ff a ll the way. Maico ho rsep o wer proved hard to b eat in the 500 Novice a nd J unior ra ces, with Gary Winters a nd J im Meservy ridin g th e 400 Maico s to fir st an d se cond in th e No vice e ven t. At th e en d of the 500 Junior, Paul Kil d al and his rock-throwing mo nster could no t be denied first place . a ft er Allen Sagouspe tangled with early leader Dule Lenhart.
