'" " s Pregnant Woman Iniured in Pits Cross Country N .... Cl By Janis Randall EUGENE, ORE., Jan. 2 , 19 72 - It was one of those unusual beautiful days for winter racing in Eugne, with a turnout of abou t 150 riders and the sun. Among the riders was AMA Pro Randy Scott who put on a very good race for everyone to watch. Randy was aboard a new Yamaha 360 MX . Territorial once aga in changed their track around by straightening the comers out a little bit. It made this track quite a bit faster . This also might have been the cause of an unusual amount of crashes that took place. Some riders didn't find the track fast enough, and practiced wheelies in a certain part of the pit area in spite of admonishment by the promoting club. A woman was slammed into by a wheelie-ing rider, and was taken to the hospital with two broken arms and a broken leg. To top it off she was p regnant. At this writing she is still in se rious condition. The 125 Sen ior class saw Kei th Nerseth (D KW) take first overall, with Ke n Burley (Pe n) p ressuring Keith very hard, swapping p ositio ns, b ut taking sec ond, and S te ve Toffdahl (Ric) righ t on both of their tails had to settle for th ird. Bruce Brown (B ul) took h ls first win of the season in the 250 Junior class a nd following h im was Mike Brogden on a Bultac o also, to take second overa ll, a nd not to far behind them was Mike Hubbs (Bul) getting the checkered flag for third overall. Bill Oliver (Bul) once again took first in the 250 Senior class, bu t closing in on him was Mike Bailey riding his new 250 Yamaha. Mike didn't have any luck getting around him so he wound up second. The Open Senior class was the best and fastest race of the day. Randy Scott (Yam) a nd Rick Andres (Mai) changed leads back and fourth through all three motos with Ken Dawe (Mai) rig ht t here b ehind them to watch. F inally in th e third moto R ic k stayed ahead of Ra ndy until he made a mistake. Randy slip ped p ast him for firs t overall and Rick took second w ith Dawe , third. The course consisted of desert trails, fire roads through pine forests, lava beds that slowed even the best rider to a crawl a nd lots of sand whoop-de-docs. The course was 32 miles long and the riders were to make three laps. Many dropped out after one lap due to the snow and ice conditions in the upper elevations. Riders lined up for the dead engine start waiting to see the smoke bomb. The wind was b lowing. It was cold. The guys were getting a little impatient as the smoke bom b was late b eing lit. Finally th e smoke was see n and all e ngi nes were shut down. They were started by the wave of a green flag . Famed cross-country rider Ke n Habeck of Seattle was firs t to the smoke in a real close race with Bend rider Mike McMannus. Habeck elected to go a little out of his way and make use of a dirt ro ad while McMannus blasted through the sagebrush. Both were mounted on 400 Huskies. At the end of lap one, 58 min u tes later, it was Seattle school teacher Habeck in the lead. Four minutes behind him was 125 DKW rider Tom Robinson, followed by Brian Eastburn (Mai). Ra y Crawford riding a 250 Husky and not far behind was Steve S t o t e sb u ry riding a Poweroll Performance 125 Honda. Second lap it was still Habeck and Ro b inso n only two m in u tes apart now. They were still followed by 250 Maico rider Brian Eastburn, 12 5 Honda-mo unted Fran k INTRODUCTORY ACK PRO DUCTS, 6 76 Auz era is Ave. San Jose Ca 95125. 408 ·293 ·511 I I D e e ter MX .nQ u l t IC S ' North Selby Motors On the Pro Course Classes: Novice (less Junior & Expert than 4 ... - (415) 369-4112 _-- •' Bultaco _ CASH FOR EXPERTS TROPHIES - 6 PLACES AII Juniors & Novices Gates Open 7 am Sign up -7 -9 Practice 8 - 9 :3 0 First Race - 10 :3 0 Sharp !
