COP COPS '" '" '" c.. .... '" en HARE HOP By Al ice Rhea FOUR CORNERS, CAL.,Jan. 16 , 19 72 - Pasadena M.C . furnished absolu tely p er fec t wea ther for their Holiday Hop Ha re Scrambles this weekend ; c oo l and clear with a ver y light breeze. It was just warm enough t o di spense wi th the long johns. It has rained o r sn owed re cently and the ground, which is usually ankle-deep silt was h ar d and fast. Add to that one well marked, fast, fun course with lo ts of turns and yo u have a near perfect desert race . Top No vices sc rap in the boani es . The only complaint I heard was about the last road-erossing go ing into the pi t/finish area. It was danger marked b ut th e flagmen were standing in the middle of the road rather than in fro nt o f it and a few gu ys did ugly get-offs at th at point. . Trail Novices went o nly one lo op . I was unable t o attend their finish but Pasadena mem b ers said Darrell Quick, rode his H onda in for a first pl ace. Steve W. Stevens a nd h is Harley Baja cam e in second. The referee is going to have to decide whether third pla ce belongs to Sharon Wil son , er, ROSENAU ER, wa s the fi rst gi rl . en ;;: w Z W ...J U >- U Joel Semp le (Baja ) or to Ra ndy Crawford (Hod) . Randy overshot the finish and was fourth wh en h e got back in line. Pasadena members think Judy Lovell, (DKW) w as the first girl trail Novice. It is really hard to t ell these days with the gir ls wearing their hair short and the guys wearing theirs lo ng. Meanwhile, over at the o ther finish line, Gen e Cannad y rode his 36 0 Yamaha in first o vera ll, follow ed b v th e first Amat eur, Mitch Ma yes (Husky) . Third o verall and first division 2 lightweight w as Bill Friant (Puch) followed b y first lightweight Larry Berquist (Bul). First girl was Sharon Rosenauer (R ic). You say you never heard of her? Well, she used t o b e Sh aron Wilson until Dec. 12 when she go t married. Best wis hes for a su per-hap py, you two. Second girl was J an Ditson (Ric) . Firs t N ovice was Dav e Pe terson (Bul). Dave was wearin g a b ig grin a nd said he really lik ed the course, p ointing out th at it w as, UA good, su p er-v.... ell marked co urse. Lo ts of fu n ." Fir st 5 0 0 Novice was 8 75 , Kim ~1c K ean (Hus) , fo llo w ed b y Scott Perrin (lI us) . Second 250 Novic e J eff Win kel was foll ow ed b y th re e 5 0 0 Novices, Ch et Welchel (Suz) , Mike Marsh (Gre) , and Ray Caselli (Hus) . Peter Medino (H us) was third 250 Novice , fo llow ed by my fav orite Novice Dal e Rhea . Dale usually gets so en th used th at he rips th e handlebars o ff h is Su zu ki, but t oday he cooled it a little and manag ed t o finish . Nice goin " Hon , Fifth 250 Novic e was Mark Windsor (Bul). There were some big names missing from t od ay' s line- up at th e finish . J .N . and Thorwaldson weren't here, and Whitey Martino fouled all the spark p lugs he had. Th e flu has had Lar ry Pfu tzenreuter fo r a coup le o f weeks so he w atched th is o ne. Big Bill Bogner lost o ne of his tires a nd Ge orge Walker didn't finis h either but said his excuse wasn't excit in g enou gh t o talk abou t (? ) and Steve Ellsw o rt h ins ists that he saw George sittin g in a sandwash and th ough t he ought to st op and keep h im com pan y . Jeff Wright was fourth o r fifth t o the b omb, but his cylin der sta rted ge tting air fro m the wrong place an d he had t o p ack it in before h e seize d the engine. Th e s e results ar e m ostly a h opeful guess o n m y p art, as I w alked down the line asking people wh o they were. I ju st go t to where I knew wh o a few people wer e from th eir numb ers, and now I h ave trouble t elling th e Exp er ts fr om the N ovices and 500's from T rail b ikes. Guess I w ill get used t o th e ne w soo n... Meanwh ile, my n umber s ap ol ogies t o an ybody I slighted. The Gr and Prix st y le fini sh re ally h ad people st ac ke d u p and I d on't envy the people wh o have t o so rt o u t th e fin al results . Th e Pasadena M.C. really did a grea t j ob wi th this race. They brought beautiful w ea ther, laid o ut a fun c o urse an d marked it very well. They h ad a bi g, big turn out and I'm sure m ost of the ra cers will b e looking fo rw ard t o their next run.
