Many of th e names an d fa ces are th e same a t Trojan Speedway, but the Trojan Renegade riders are still a different con t ingen t o f c om petitors compared t o last year. Today, they are one year o ld er with h ard-won ex perience. Two of th e mo st o utst and ing riders t o date are four-time ch am p io n Bob Sanders and Dan Corbett wh o are resp o nsib le fo r some of the h ottest two-rid er duels seen o n the fifth-mil e clay o val. Of th e las t twelve ma in events, Sanders has accounted for nine and Corbett for three. . In tonight's action, Corbett won b oth the 250 TT an d F.T . Mai n Events in a breeze , while Sander s, a lthough winning four features, h ad all he co uld h andle in scoring h is victories over his t op riva l, Tom Doty (lion) in both 12 5 TT and F.T. Mains, and was h ard pressed in t he 100 TT Main by Steve Okuda (Ka w) . Even an impartial spectator would have to rate tonigh t '5 actio n as som e of th e best in short-tra ck competition, eve n t o th e extent of forgetting ab out th e chilling n igh ts in So uth Gate. Whil e Corbett was b usy win ning th e features, Ron Powell of 10 -lap Palm dale , a former track champion who is using these events to sharpen his reflexes before flying to Houston, Texas t o co mpet e at th e Astrod ome January 28 and 29, was in the pro cess of findin g ou t ju st h ow t ough this bunch of rider s can be to beat. In the 250 TT Main, Powell held second position for six laps befor e o ver-shoo ting th e second d o g-leg while under pressure by d efendi ng ch am p io n , R ick G oade (Bul) . a nd Sanders (Ka w). Droppin g b ack to fo urth, Pow ell hi t the dirt on the eight h lap in th e second co m er wh ile attem p ti ng to make u p lost gro und. At th e chec kered it was Corb ett (Bul) , Goade, Sa nders, J oe Brown (Bul), and Pow ell (Bul). Th e 250 F.T. Main saw Corb ett going for th e win wire-to-wire, but th e real race was for second position as first Mark Revels h eld the sp ot fo r five lap s before h aving t o give gro und t o Goad e on the sixth lap. Startin g o ff in fo urth p ositi on at th e drop o f th e sta rti ng flag, Goad e, using every form th at carried him t o last ye ar 's 250 championship, had to o verc om e a much in sp ired Sanders as both riders exchange d positions in a ro yal b attle for th e runner-up spot. In the thick of this private batt le (or maybe not so privat e), was Revels (Bul) and Powell (Bu l). The fin al outcome of this thriller was Corbett, Goade, Sanders, Revels, and Powell . Kawasa ki Dealers Associatio n. Using part of t hat loot, he's now into the 250cc class aboard a Kawasa ki F8 1-M. (Bob didn't waste any time getting the feel of it first two times out, he copped 1st finishes in both the TT and Flat-Track, South Gate Raceway, Jan . 6) Topp ing 685 entries, Larry (43 years old) packed all his 190 po unds on his box-stock Bighorn . Even the muffler was strictly standard. Only the handlebars were changed. Also competing in what was sure no cherry-pickin' event, were Malcolm Smith and the entire CEA Club, promoters of the Last Chance Enduro . Larry joins George Walker and Jim Sovie as recent post-award winners on Kawasaki Bighorns. Big Old Larry Bornhurst Wins Big on a Bigho rn . So the moral of our story is, not on ly can a 43-year-old family man like Larry Bornhurst find happiness among the hotshoes on a Kawasaki Bigh orn - almost anybody can . With the Junior (N ovic e) riders com p et in g for troph ies the 100cc class was easily won b y a very consi sten t rider, Steve Pinneri, o n a Hodaka with a I, 2, I. Second place o vera ll was Bruce Ganson (H o n) . Ridin g on a very fast Rickman sponsored b y Omo Cycle Sales in Ventura, Jim Byrd ran awa y with the first pl ac e 125cc Junior h onors with a I, 2,2 . " With th e Senio rs being paid to the first three pl aces overa ll, J im Dawson (Yam) to o k the lead during the first 125cc Senior moto and start ed to stretch it out when h e bl ew a tire forcing him o u t of the money. This allo w ed R ay Byer s o n a Penton to take first ch eckered in this mo to. Taking a sec o nd in the first m oto, Yamaha tamer, Tom Grant managed a first in the next two motos to take first o verall. Byers, also riding for Omo, finis hed second overall with Yamah a jockey, Johnny Grant winning the 125 Se nio r third spot. T he largest class , entry wise, the 250cc Juniors, produced another fine co nsist en t rider, Ken J an son (C Z) who fin ish ed with a I , 2, I to take th e first o vera ll troph y . R and y Schmi t z (Yam ) grabbed second . Mr . Ossa , Dave Pessy, af te r gra b b ing th e lead in th e 25 0 Sen io r clas s first m oto , seized h is engi ne an d h ad t o call it quits for the day. T ak in g over firs t spo t, Mark Cook (BuI) shot o u t in fron t of th e p ack to take first in this rno to. Co o k also won the next two for the overall. Frank Math ew s, who came in second in all three motos , gave Cook so me stiff competition during the th ird ro und by staying on his tail for the w hole p eriod. Steve Muehle r (CZ) and Ra nd y Berkeley [Mai] tied for third. With 18 riders competing, th e Open J unio r class ove rall winner was Geoff Pelh ar (BuI). Bill Kelly (Hus), another Omo sponsored rid er , wound up with a second overall. The b iggest and usually the most exciting event of the day is the Open Seni o r class. Today was no exception. Durin g the firs t moto, a fierce battle develoJ>ed between two fine rid ers, J oe Irwin (Ma i] an d Joe Veillon (Hus) . After switching p osit ion s severa l times, Irwin ca me down o ff th e start h ill j um p in three pi eces. H e wasn 't inj ured bu t his bike sp lit in h alf. It was so me sigh t t o watch a da zzled Irw in pi ck himself up , look around to see what caused h is spill and th en notice th at h e had two unicy cles o n the trac k. J oe Veill on, also Om o sp o nso red, captured the first p lace overall Senior cash. Gary Martin (CZ) p o ck et ed second m oney with Mike Brown (C Z) taking third.
