<0 N Schutz Shows USRC MXers How '" '" '" 0.. N .... '" By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Jan. 7, 1972 Werner Schutz is good. He proved that of course, in winning the Trans-AMA Support Class at Saddleback and Livermore, accompanied by much to-do about the "Americanization of Werner". So it was no surprise that Werner won the 250 class and the 500 class on his Maicos. \-Verner not only won the two classes with a skill and competence that the local riders have not yet attained, his winning margins were long ones. This does not detract in any manner from the skills and abilities of young men such as Bruce Baron, Morris Malone, Bruce ~IcDougal, David Boydstun, and Chuck Bowers, all of whom are under 20 years of age and all giving away many years of experience to Mr. Schutz. In the first 250 Inter/Ex . moto, Schutz jumped into an immediate lead and was never seriously challenged by anyone. Malone was holding second, McDougal third and Baron fourth, when a thick fog bank rolled in. The enlightening part of a rider's determination became apparent in the thick fog. Werner never slowed. Malone and McDougal slowed just a tad. Bruce Baron. who wears glasses, must have c .., '" ~ W Z W ..J U >- U thought he had driven into the Holland Tunnel and somebody turned out the ligh ts, With all that fog on his glasses Bruce h ad to virtually com e to a stop. Greg Smith came by st art/finish, gave a thumbs-down gesture (I think it was thumbs-down; in the fog it could have been another digit), and finished the mota in something like low gear. The rest of the 250 and 500 motos were much the same with the exception of the last 250 moto when Werner Schutz fell and Bruce ~IcDougal, riding Bowers' 125 Penton, got the win. Werner had a good night, with but a minor incident that seemed to upset him tremendously. While Werner was out practicing, someone ripped off a gas cap from his 405 Maico. It wasn't so much the loss of a minor item such as the gas cap that bothered him, but that it would even happen. As he said, he is friends with everyone, and hopes everyone will be friends with him and that if any fellow co m p e ti to r needs something, he will be more than pleased to help them. Personally, 1 can't believe it was a fellow biker who ripped off the gas cap. I believe it was an unthinking souvenir hunter. Anywa y, it makes me feelbetter to think it wasn't a biker.
