'" By Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL., Dec. 17, 1971 - What started out to be, o r could h ave been, a great night of motocross racing "fell" apa rt in a h urry. Mike Cram, No.1 :\lX·er in the C:\lC for 19 7 1, signed up to do his thing in th e 125 and 500 Int/Exp. events, he did his th ing alright. On the first lap of the first moto in the 125 Int/Exp. moto, Mike hit the jump with way too mu ch of something, and did one of those numbers from which there is no wav to save it. l\like had to be 15 feet in the air with the front wheel arcing over to point straight at th e ground, and that's the way he landed, kru nch - man and machine suffered badly bu t Mike got the worst of it , a b roken shoulder and m u ch, much pain . Th is w as where Rick got off. He didn't get off hard bu t he was b o un ced around a b it by such fo lks as Br uce Bar o n , Mo rris Malone, Bruce McDougal, Greg Sm ith , Da vid Boydstun an d that's p retty h eavy company to fall in front of. At any rate the bike suffered min o r damage and Woods felt that disc retion was the better part of valor, and hung it up for the night. Bruce McDougal found every thing to his liking in the 250 and 500 classes, but not the 125 class. Bruce won b o th the 250 and 500 events, and after so me close racing in both, all three motos wen t to a di ff eren t winner, McDougal's consis te ncy, a first and two seconds won him the overall first. The three weeks p rior to th e holidays, saw Don Weeks aboard h is Penton coming on fast. Tonigh t he did not lack any fire as h e hung up a firs t in the 125 Intj Exp , class .
