50 Years Ago AUGUST 31, 1971 40 Years Ago AUGUST 26, 1981 P134 LOOKING BACK Broc Glover was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago after winning the 1981 500cc National Motocross final at Carlsbad Raceway. Johnny O'Mara won the 125cc class... Freddie Spencer won the Grand National Championship Road Race at Pocono International Raceway, but it was Dale Singleton who wrapped up the U.S. Road Racing Championship title... We tested the new Honda CBX sport tourer and the Husqvarna CR250R motocrosser... Marco Lucchinelli won the 500cc World Championship Road Race in Finland. Front-page news was President Nixon's announcing his plan to pump up the ailing economy, which would include, among other negative impacts on the motorcycle industry, a 90-day surtax on motorcycles, but no one expected it to end in that time. All this came as the country was experiencing a dock strike that kept new motorcycles stranded on boats floating around the world... Mark Blackwell, Gary Jones and Jim Rice were the big winners at the Tri-Am Motocross at Rough Rider Park in Simi Valley, California. Zach Osborne won championships in the 65 and 85cc classes at Ponca City 20 years ago. (Below) Larry Pegram won the Sturgis Short Track in 1991.
