LOOKING BACK
Our latest test bike, the 1981 Kawasaki GPz550, was featured on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago... We had coverage of the GNC
doubleheader, the Santa Fe Short Track and the Peoria TT in Illinois,
over the weekend. Alex Jorgensen topped the short track and Scott
Pearson the TT... Dutch privateer Jack Middleburg shocked the racing
world when he passed Kenny Roberts on the last lap to win the British
Grand Prix at Silverstone... Broc Glover won the SCORE Off-Road
World Championship at Riverside International Raceway.
Cycle News staffer Don Woods attempted to ride a 125cc motorcycle, a
Harley-Davidson Rapido, across the U.S. from the two farthest points of
the country. He rode from Maine to California, starting with the rear wheel
touching the Atlantic Ocean. He made it to California, but fatigue and a
mechanical prevented his front wheel from touching the Pacific Ocean.
But he got to California in 89 hours and 25 minutes, and new record for a
small bike. We recounted the last few hours... We featured part one of our
multi-part profile on racer Dick Mann.
