VOL. 50 ISSUE 25 JUNE 25, 2013 P31 BROTHERLY LOVE here's a lot of brotherly love between Malcolm and James Stewart and it certainly came to light at the Budds Creek National MX, where they banged bars for the first time in a National. The two have always trained and ridden together, but their outlook on racing couldn't be more different. "When I have a bad weekend, I go home and work and work and work," James said. "When Malcolm has a bad weekend, it bothers him, but he can brush it off easier and keep the racing part more fun. I think that works really good for him, and maybe I could learn something from that, too." At Budds Creek, James was running up front in both motos, and both motos he crashed out of the front-running spot in the dreaded rollers. In the first moto, he ended up catching up to Malcolm as Malcolm was working his way forward at the tail end of the top 10 with a lap and a half to go. That's when Malcolm nearly went down exiting a turn, and, while PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE COX T he was flailing to keep his bike upright, James – still in a rut in the same corner, with nowhere really to go – ran right into his brother and fell down. The contact actually looked like it helped Malcolm stay upright. "I actually had a feeling like it was going to be some kind of contact because I was faster, but it wasn't like he was going backwards," James said. "He was faster than the guys in front Malcolm Stewart (32) finished ahead of his famous brother at Budds Creek. of him and I was faster than him. But I would catch him, then try to go to a different spot, then lose some time. And then he would pass the guy in front of him, then I had to go around that guy and then catch back up to Malcolm. So, it was a lot of cat and mouse. But I knew it was going to be pretty tough to get around him. It in in the top 20 overall in a National is impressive. Hepler, whose motocross career was cut short by a series of concussions, says he's ridden a few enduros in the past and has always enjoyed racing off-road.
