LOOKING BACK
Forty years ago, Randy Mamola won both legs of the Formula One
segments of the AMA GNC/Winston Pro Series at Laguna Seca in what
was his first National victory. He was pictured on the cover wheelying
the RG500 Suzuki; Eddie Lawson won the Superbike and Expert
Lightweight races... Mark Barnett, who went 1-1, won the opening round
of the World Championship 125cc MX Series, which was held at Mid-
Ohio; Harry Everts was second overall with a 5-5... Donnie Hansen
won the CMC 4-Stroke Championships at Carlsbad.
Mark Brelsford was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago
from the Ascot TT National. Brelsford came away with the win... We tested
the Yamaha R-5 street bike. We said it "looks like what you'd get if you
crossed a jukebox with a slot machine."... Things got a little heated between
John DeSoto and Mike Cram when the two tangled at a local CMC
motocross at Carlsbad Raceway. Spectators lodged protests against the
actions of DeSoto who had retaliated by running Cram off the track. DeSoto
later admitted he had lost his temper.
