50 Years Ago AUGUST 3, 1971 40 Years Ago JULY 29, 1981 P114 LOOKING BACK Forty years ago, Randy Mamola won both legs of the Formula One segments of the AMA GNC/Winston Pro Series at Laguna Seca in what was his first National victory. He was pictured on the cover wheelying the RG500 Suzuki; Eddie Lawson won the Superbike and Expert Lightweight races... Mark Barnett, who went 1-1, won the opening round of the World Championship 125cc MX Series, which was held at Mid- Ohio; Harry Everts was second overall with a 5-5... Donnie Hansen won the CMC 4-Stroke Championships at Carlsbad. Mark Brelsford was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago from the Ascot TT National. Brelsford came away with the win... We tested the Yamaha R-5 street bike. We said it "looks like what you'd get if you crossed a jukebox with a slot machine."... Things got a little heated between John DeSoto and Mike Cram when the two tangled at a local CMC motocross at Carlsbad Raceway. Spectators lodged protests against the actions of DeSoto who had retaliated by running Cram off the track. DeSoto later admitted he had lost his temper. Nicky Hayden won five races and claimed two class championships at the Dirt Track Amateur Nationals in Illinois 30 years ago.
