P60 MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 5 / JULY 10, 2021 THE WICK 338 / SOUTHWICK, MASSACHUSETTS MYOWNRACE 3 ELI TOMAC 4TH (8-1) 450MX Eli Tomac was up to his usual tricks at Southwick: struggling in the first moto and winning the second. "First, I want to thank the Monster Energy Kawasaki team for all their hard work," Tomac said. "We've tried a few different setups this year, but today was the most comfortable I've felt on the bike, as you can tell by my second-moto performance. We didn't change much from last week, other than slightly drop- ping the forks, but that seemed to make all the difference and I felt like a completely different rider during moto two." 9 ADAM CIANCIARULO 6TH (5-6) 450MX Once again, Adam Cianciarulo showed a lot of promise early in the motos but tapered off during the second half. "I have a lot of posi ves to take away from today," Cianciarulo said. "I was first in 450 qualifying, I got good starts in both motos, and I rode with the top-three guys for as long as I could. The track was a bit rougher than I expected, which meant some bike changes were needed. I'm going to spend some extra me this week training in rough condi ons similar to Southwick so that I can adapt to these condi ons a lot quicker next me." career-best second overall out- doors with 3-4 moto finishes. Third overall went to Star Rac- ing Yamaha's Justin Cooper, who salvaged a sixth in the first moto after an early crash, and then led the second moto until Hunter Lawrence tracked him down. The other Lawrence in the 250 class, Jett, came into the race as the points leader, but a couple of big crashes in the first moto put a damper on his first visit to the legendary Southwick sand circuit. He went 9-3 on the day and will still wear the red plate at the next round, though his points advantage over Cooper has shrunk to just three points (204- 201). Hunter Lawrence is third in the current rankings at 178 points. Honda's Ken Roczen (4-2), as well as TLD/Red Bull/GasGas rider Justin Barcia (2-4), joined Ferrandis on the overall podium. Former champion Eli Tomac was fourth overall on another lopsided day, posting 8-1 moto scores. With the win, Ferrandis extended his points lead to 19 over Roczen (224-205). Tomac moves up to third with 167 points. "Man, this feels so good," said Hunter Lawrence of his perfect day. "It's a bit of an emotional win for me with everything that I've been through these past few years." Jo Shimoda, the Monster En- ergy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider from Japan, followed Lawrence in the overall tally. He posted a Lately, it seems, it's taking Eli Tomac a moto to figure things out before winning the second. He's done that three races in a row now.
