50 Years Ago JULY 27, 1971 40 Years Ago JULY 22, 1981 P120 LOOKING BACK Mark Barnett was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for winning the Superbowl of Motocross and clinching the 1981 Supercross Championship. Chuck Sun and Mike Bell filled out the podium that night; Dede Cates won the Women's race... Marco Lucchinelli edged out Kenny Roberts for the win at the Belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps; Randy Mamola and Yamaha-mounted Barry Sheene went 3-4, respectively, and Anton Mang was the 250cc class winner... Brian Anderson won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb with a time of 13:20.86. A 15-day suspension levied against Gene Romero and three other racers was upheld by the AMA's legal counsel. Romero and the other racers were punished for having submitted falsified medical forms... One of our cover stories was the return of motorcycles at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Gary Myers clicked off the winning time of 15:11.96... Czech rider Valastiml Valek won the Inter-AMA Motocross at Orlando Sports Stadium... Sonny Burres won the Castle Rock TT National... Rich Thorwaldson and J.N. Roberts traded wins at a dual European scrambles in Hi Vista, California. The racers of the Belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps push- start their bikes off the start line 40 years ago. Moto enthusiast Scott Freeman built this electric-power Yamaha (that started out life as a YZ400F) 20 years ago. Freeman gave Cycle News a chance to ride it.
