LOOKING BACK
Mark Barnett was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for
winning the Superbowl of Motocross and clinching the 1981 Supercross
Championship. Chuck Sun and Mike Bell filled out the podium that
night; Dede Cates won the Women's race... Marco Lucchinelli
edged out Kenny Roberts for the win at the Belgian Grand Prix at
Francorchamps; Randy Mamola and Yamaha-mounted Barry Sheene
went 3-4, respectively, and Anton Mang was the 250cc class winner...
Brian Anderson won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb with a time of 13:20.86.
A 15-day suspension levied against Gene Romero and three other racers
was upheld by the AMA's legal counsel. Romero and the other racers were
punished for having submitted falsified medical forms... One of our cover
stories was the return of motorcycles at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Gary
Myers clicked off the winning time of 15:11.96... Czech rider Valastiml
Valek won the Inter-AMA Motocross at Orlando Sports Stadium... Sonny
Burres won the Castle Rock TT National... Rich Thorwaldson and J.N.
Roberts traded wins at a dual European scrambles in Hi Vista, California.
