32 JAKE GAGNE DNF-1 SBK "Yeah, it feels good to get something like that off the back," Gagne said of ending his winless drought. "Two hours before the race they told me I was on the third row, so I didn't hear about that new fun li le rule [where you start race two where you finish race one]. So, I knew I had to get off to a good start, because I knew Mat [Scholtz] was going to go, and Bobby [Fong] was going to go. I tried so hard to get a good start, I slipped and slipped the clutch. Luckily, from the experience last year, I knew which way to adjust the clutch. I was going down the straight- away trying to figure it out, and then once I got that dialed in, I knew the bike would keep rolling. I tried to make some passes. Mat was tough. This track is tough to make passes. Turn 10 is one of the main areas and that was where Mat was really strong, even Bobby, too." MYOWNRACE 11 MATHEW SCHOLTZ 1-2 SBK "When he [Gagne] passed me, I tried to hang onto him for about three or four laps a erwards and I was pushing turn 10A, forcing Baz offline, where he would eventually lay the uber-expensive Ducati into the gravel trap. Scholtz would eventually come home three seconds clear of M4 Ecstar Suzuki's Bobby Fong, with Gagne's teammate Josh Herrin 12 seconds off Scholtz's pace in third, with Fong's new teammate Cam- eron Petersen and Kyle Wyman on the beautiful green Panera Bread Ducati in fifth. Race two was another tense affair as Gagne, Scholtz and Fong engaged in proper hand- to-hand combat early on. For Fong, he saw a potential win vanish as he was deemed to have jumped the start, neces- sitating a ride-through penalty. ROAD RACE FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1 / APRIL 30-MAY 2, 2021 ROAD ATLANTA / BRASELTON, GEORGIA P82 Mathew Scholtz (11) rode a near-perfect race in the opening bout to take a second career MotoAmerica win.
