40 years ago. Honda gave us a close-up look of its all-new V-twin factory
racer... For the second year in a row, Mike Kidd won the AMA GNC/
Winston Pro TT round at Ascot Park... We covered the Forked River
National Enduro in Columbus, New Jersey, where Michigan's Darryl
Kuenzer, riding a KTM, took the win... Bob Hannah out-dueled Kent
Howerton in a historic battle to win the 250cc National Motocross at
Saddleback Park. Mark Barnett won both 125cc motos.

Local racing action was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago. A photo of Billy Clements at Carlsbad CMC motocross was pictured,
as well as a photo of Dave Damron leading the way at an ACA road race
at Willow Springs... Mark Blackwell, Jim West, John DeSoto, Gary
Chaplin, Terry Clark, Rich Thorwaldson and Bruce Baron were just
some of the big wigs of motocross tearing up the local scene all across
Southern California this week, and we had plenty of race coverage... We
showed our readers Kawasaki's new 350SS Three street bike, capable of
going 148 mph via 55 horsepower.
