Christmas was again the hot topic 40 years ago and our annual Christmas
Gift Guide was featured inside Cycle News 40 years ago... We interviewed
the new kid on the block who was making waves on the trackâFreddie
Spencer... We took a close-up look at the trick machinery that competed
in the recent 4-Stroke MX Nationals... Bob Balentine won the Beatty-
to-Vegas Hare & Hound, which was a "replacement" race for the banned
Barstow-to-Las Vegas H&H... We reported that Brad Lackey signed a two-
year contract with Suzuki worth an estimated $320,000.

Fifty years ago, our Christmas Gift Guide was featured in issue 49 and
a motorcycle-riding Santa, of course, was depicted on the cover...
Evel Knievel successfully jumped his Olympia Beer-sponsored Harley-
Davidson over 13 cars at Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, California... We
covered Ascot's last TT race of the year, and Eddie Worth came home
the winner... We also covered the Minibike Nationals, which drew nearly
200 entries, at Saddleback Park.
