LOOKING BACK
The "O' Show," Johnny O'Mara, was pictured on the cover 40 years
ago aboard his iconic Honda-powered Mugen 125cc motocrosser. We
featured an interview with O'Mara who had earlier won the USGP in
Ohio... We had coverage of the final round of the AMA Supercross Series
at San Diego. Mike Bell, the 1980 Supercross champ, capped off the
championship with the win... We covered the Check Chase Hare & Hound
in Johnson Valley, a race that was canceled but went on anyway. Bob
Balentine was recognized as the winner.

NOVEMBER 5, 1980
A photo from the L.A. International Grand Prix motocross in California was
pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Bay Mare hosted the
race and Maico rider Ake Jonsson captured the overall victory. Jim West
was the top American rider... A few days earlier at Ascot, the Inter-Am
Motocross ran its course. Jonsson's Maico teammate Willie Bauer took
the overall win... We also had coverage of the Trans-AMA Motocross in
Franklin, Georgia, where Joel Robert took the win.... We tested Yamaha's
XS-1 650 street bike.
