P124 50 Years Ago OCTOBER 6, 1970 LOOKING BACK The San Jose Mile was featured in Cycle News 40 years ago. Randy Goss took the win ahead of Hank Scott and Steve Eklund. Wayne Rainey won the 12-lap Trophy race over Ronnie Jones. Goss led Scott by just four points going into the next and final round of the Grand National Championship... Alan Christian won the California State Invitational Speedway Championship in San Bernardino... Mark Barnett won the AMA Trans-USA MX opener at Mid-Ohio MX Park in Lexington. 40 Years Ago OCTOBER 1, 1980 We pictured Rick Wood on the cover of Cycle News celebrating winning the 1970 Speedway National Championship at Costa Mesa... Wildfires raged in California 50 years ago. Motocross racers were advised to evacuate Carlsbad Raceway after the first motos were already held... The 4 Aces M.C. held its popular two-day Grand Prix off-road races at Willow Springs Raceway... We tested the 58cc Yamaha Mini Enduro... We printed all the riders representing the U.S. at the upcoming ISDE. Bud Ekins, Malcom Smith, Mike Patrick, John Penton, Ron Bond and Dave Mungenast made up the Trophy Team.
