P134 50 Years Ago SEPTEMBER 29, 1970 LOOKING BACK Speedway star Mike Bast announced his retirement at just 27 years of age. We had an interview with the champ... Ricky Graham won the AMA GNC National Half Mile at the Tulsa State Fairground in Oklahoma. Randy Goss and Hank Scott left the race tied for the championship lead... We reported that Gary Wells was in intensive care after crashing his motorcycle while attempting a jump at Ceasar's Palace for the television show That's Incredible... Brit Michael Lee won the World Individual Speedway Championship in Sweden. 40 Years Ago SEPTEMBER 24, 1980 Speedway racer Rick Woods was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. He was one of the stars competing at Costa Mesa's regular speedway... We reported that Grand Prix motocross racers Bengt Aberg and Arne Kring were passengers in a light plane crash in Sweden. The plane made an emergency landing on a highway and collided with a car, killing the driver. Aberg and Kring were uninjured... Don Vesco broke the all-time motorcycle land speed record at Bonneville, Utah, averaging 251.924 mph on a gas-powered, dual-engine 350cc Yamaha streamliner. New Superbike Champion Doug Chandler leads race winner Miguel Duhamel at Topeka 30 years ago. (Left) Mike Brown capped off the 125cc Motocross World Championship with a sweep at Gaildorf, 20 years ago. Grant Langston had already clinched the championship. Brown finished third.
