Th e evening also featu red a Scratch pro gram , and veteran B o bb y " B o o g a l o o" S ch w a r t z showed he still has what it takes to be a winner. T he big news of the night was that Interna t i on al S p e edw a y signed a co ntract with the Fair Board and th ere wi ll be o ne mo re year of Sp eedway o n th e Bullring. T he Sid ec a r s w er e also usin g a Scra t ch fo rm at , and the nerves we re definitel y showin g a s they came to the line for th e first time. Showin g the stuff that has m ade th em a team to be rec kone d wi th , Bob B rayt o n an d Dwa yn e K ing showed t he bo ys the wa y home . D w a y n e Carmont an d Richa rd Ta ling. the Kiw i team . were a so lid sec o n d , wi th John Matherson and Jack Straw rounding out the fi eld w it h third. The second heat was all Bill Math erson and Da le Lee der, going wire to w ire. Sc o tt Cole and Leya Craven s we re second . The th ird heat was a dogfight , but th e J on es bo y s and their j unkyard spe ci al K awasaki held off all comer s fo r the win. St eve Morrow and Ch ris Chapm an we re seco nd , wi th Stu art Glass and Deion Stokes, the current National ch amps , th ird. In the second round , Brayton and King put another win in t h e books , this time holding off the hard -charg ing team of Kenny Mcintyre and Dirk Vot aw. Morrow and Chapman picked up the show money. B 36 NOVEMBER 8, 2000' cue • e In the ne xt heat, Matherson and St raw b ro k e on to p , on ly to see the red flag co me out when Carmont and Ta ling oversteered com ing out of four and gave t h e infield crew a cheap th ril l. They li ned up again , and again Math erso n and Straw we re on to p , chased by Math erson a nd Leed er. They fin ished in that o rder , but both teams advanced to the sem is. In the final heat, Glass and Stokes grabbed the wi n fro m the Jones boys o n the final lap as the y o utfoxed them out of fo ur and won the drag race to t he c heckered. Co le and Cr av e ns : were th ird . In the first sem i, the Mission Yamaha team of Matherson and Leeder went wire to wire, m aking sure the y wo ul d be o ne of the final fo ur in the mai n event. Morrow and Chapm an were second, holding off a ve ry hungry Jones team and also advancing to the main. The second sem i w as doom ed from the start. Two laps in, Brayton and K ing were running on top when th e red came o ut when Ma th erson and Straw o v e r t u rn e d, w ith S t raw coming out on the short end o f the stick. They li ned up aga in . W ith Straw una ble to make the call , Co le took o ver the swinging d uti es, but his trip wo u ld also be a sho rt o ne. as again the rig we nt upsid e down. Cole wa nted to go aga in . but John Matherson had had enoug h and p ushed the ri g to the p its . Mci nt yre and Votaw also m an ag ed to ge t th e greasy side up , and it ca me down to M ath er son and Leeder and Glass and Sto k es. They would m ov e to th e m ain . Bra yton and King d rew th e pol e, w ith Matherson and Leed e r in two . Morrow and Chapman were in three, n e vv s with Glass and Sto k es in four. Bra y to n an d Kin g br oke on top and led for th e first la p , but on t wo Matherson and Lee der got th e drive out of fo ur that pu t them on t op . VirginiaC hampionship Hare Scrambles Series Round 11: B Ridge Hare Scrambles lue Morrison's Mountain Madness By H EAT HE R G REER MARTINSVILLE, VA, SEPT. 24 he raci ng and early fall weather heated up for the 1 1th round of the Virginia Championship Hare Scram bles Series. Rainstorms during the previous week cre ate d slippery hillclimbs and wickedly slimy fire roads on the 12.9m ile course. After slipping and slid ing on the fi rs t lap , most r i d ers w ere relie ved to find that the track had dried out qu it e a bit for the secon d lap of the thr ee-lap rac e. However, as track con d itions im proved , th e hot autumn sun beat down on the riders, making it a t iring an d d ehy drat ing r ace . Gas Gas/ Al ee-sponsored rider Dani el Mor rison shot ahead of the pack when th e hat dro pped for th e AA sta rt. Morrison ke pt up the bli stering pace to take th e overall win. During th e third lap, Casey Cycl e City /Chick-fi! -A /Pro Art Worksb ac k ed Yamah a rid er Jason Gre er latc hed o n to Mo rrison's rear fend er , but he had to settle for second overall and th e AA-class win . When Triad Pow e r sp o rt s- b ac k ed Su zuk i r ider D ean Ingra m st arted eati ng up Parker's rea r fender, Parker let him by early on the fir st lap. From that po int on , Ing ram was out of sig ht to take fir st pa ce at th e barrels. Parker held on to sec ond un til he nailed a tre e , wh ich put him down lo ng enough for Gas Gas rider Mike Lanc ast er to get by him. Lan caster cam e in sec o n d and Parker recovered to take third.
