On the final lap , Horton wa s still out front, but he wa s beg inn ing to catc h some la pped riders, while Metcalf ke pt Hor to n on his toes around every obsta cle . Horton clu ng to the front spot a t the checkers. Shue dropped Me tca lf to t hird on the final la p. Cheste r was fourth and Ward fifth. Ward fired off the gate in the sec ond moto , with Metc a lf, S h u e and Ches te r in pursuit . Horton wa s a 1'10show . Metcalf qu ickl y moved b y Ward to take the front s pot, where he remained to take the checkers . Ward landed second, followed by S hue. Th e Over 25 A class was a war for the fron t pos ition between vete ran rac ers Billy Liles and Chester. Th e pair ba tt led closely in moto o ne. Chester pu lled beside Liles to m a ke a last-lap challenge for the win , but Liles ma intained the winn ing edge at the end. In the s e cond moto , Chester took the lead off the gate , while Liles started third . Cheste r rema ined in t he fro nt spot the entire moto for the win and the overall. Liles wor ked his way into sec ond for the moto and second ove ra ll. In th e O ver 3 5 cl a s s, Ron "Wirehead " Jones rode out fro nt , with Liles in s e c on d brie fly unti l Albert McCoy moved by. McCoy then passed J ones for the lea d . By th e end of the first la p, Liles had dro p ped to s eventh . Mean while , McC o y stre tche d his le a d and cha lked up th e win. followed by Jones. In the second m oto , Georgia's Da rrell S ims got o u t of th e gate and around turn o ne first , with Jones , McC oy and Liles next in lin e . J ones shot by S ims for the le ad , followed by McCoy and then Liles . Sims dropped to la st after some problems in th e back section of the cours e . By the second lap , Liles had work ed his way into second , and by the final la p he had taken the lead for the win, with J ones taking second and McCoy third . Although Holland had grabbed the hol eshot , Woods kept him in sight and con s is tently gained g ro und on h im , and on the white -flag lap , h e was wit hi n two s e c o nd s of Holland. How e ve r. Holland turned it up a notch to t ak e the w in ju st b ik e lengths a head of Wood s , who finished out the d a y second overa ll. Moto two proved to be the best of the da y. A s ix-ride r battle for se c ond pla ce developed at about the halfwa y point. Be ing pu rsued by Cra ig Tru glio , Ha g e ma n , La ug h rid g e , Bo o t he and No rman, Palad ino ha d a target on his back , a nd yo u could ha ve thrown a blanket over the pa c k. In the e nd , Pa la dino he ld off th e cha llenge to finish second . Tr ug lio, did like wise for th ird. Pa ladino's effo rts were rewarded with seco n d o ver all o n th e da y , w hil e Laughridge posted a 2 -5 showing, good enough for th ird on the day . In the 2 50cc Inte rm e d ia te ra nks, Chris Loredo posted a 1- 1 s ho wing for the overall on the day. After snaring the holeshot and ta king a wire -to -wire vic tory in moto on e , Loredo nearly had to settle for second in moto two when J im my S tew a rt took the early lead . Stewa rt, who finished sec ond in the first moto , lo o k e d to have t h e overa ll in hand , bu t a m iscue at th e fin ish -line turn changed a ll that. As Stewart c rossed the finis h line to com plete la p th ree , he los t th e fro nt e nd and s la m med into a p ile of ha y ba les, a llo win g Lo re do to sco ot by fo r th e eventual win a nd the overall. Stewa rt pla ced an eventual fourth in the moto . However, Stewart's determined effort netted him second overall o n the day. Matt McCrumm en d omina ted t he 125cc Inte rmediate ranks aft er taking a hard -f ought win in moto one. Avo iding a big, seve n- rider p ileup in the first turn , McC rummen , a long with Eric Nye a nd Calv in Andl ov ec , pulled a w ay fro m the 18 -ri de r fie ld .'
