This race was b il led as a Th or Ra cew ea r week end an d w as al so a poi nts- payi ng roun d of t he Ca rolina Ultra Ser i e s , wh i c h m e a n t a large crowd was o n hand to race and par t ici pa te in t he festiv ities . In the first 2 50cc Pro m oto , North Carolina's J im Cheste r g ra bbed the ho leshot and led everyone down th e stai rcase , wi th Horton second , followed by Hans Neel , T o d d Baisden and Troy Crisp. Horton pass ed Chester o n ' the first lap and began to open up a gap on the field. A s Ho rt on pulled away , Neel pressured Chester for second . Neel t ri ed to make the pass for the entire m ot o , bu t Chester wo ul d not give up the sp ot. Mea nwhi le , J o n Bo ru ff, aboard a four-s t roke Y Z pr ovid e d by the inj ured K ev in W alker , cha rg ed up to p ress ure Cr isp in a bi d t o crack into the top fiv e, an d on the wh it e-fl ag lap he passed Cri sp for fourt h. By m ot o 's end , Horton had o pe ned up a large lead , and he t ook the flag going away . Chester held on I to second, ahead of Neel, Boruff and Crisp . A t the start of moto t wo, Ho rt o n grabbed the lead in t he fi rst turn and bega n to run away immediately , fol lowed by Paul J ustu s, Neel, Yama hamounted Brian Lane and Chester. Chester passed Lan e early on the second lap and j o in ed Ju st u s a nd Neel in a fierce battle for sec ond . As the race progressed , Horton continued to stretch his lead, while back in the pack , a tiring Justus beg an to fade under pressure from Chester, who in turn was coming under fire from a determined Cr isp. At the same time, Boruff moved to within a bike length of the top five. No more passes were completed , and th e checkered flag fell with Horton taking the win by a la rg e margin, followed by Neel, Ch est er , a revived Justus, and Cr isp . On t he third lap , N orthrop got by N eel as well, but Neel refused to roll ov er and a great battle for sec ond ensued, with Ch ester hold ing the spot ah ead o f North ro p and Ne e!. Justu s round ed out the fi rs t five . On l a p four, Northrop pa sse d Ch est er for sec ond , and a charg in g Bo ruff began to close on the to p fi ve . Boruff pa ssed J us t us for fifth b y m oto 's en d, a nd th e flag fell with Ho rt o n w inning b y a large margi n, fo llowe d b y N o rthr o p , Chester, Neel and Boruff. T he second -mote ho leshot went to Boruff, ahead of N orthrop , Neel and Lusk . Although Hort on got a midpack start, he moved up to th ird by the end of the first lap . O n l ap tw o , Ho rt on moved i nto seco nd an d N o r th r o p sim ultaneously displaced Neel for third. On t he next lap , Northro p m ov ed int o sec ond as Hort on wa s di sap pearing over the horizon . Despite h i s best efforts , Boruff was unabl e to crack back into the top five , finishing six th.
