Portland Trail Riders: Josh Woods rode 10 both the 125cc and 250cc Pro-clas s victories at the special "Race For The Heart" event in Portland, Michigan. Race From The Heart PorUand Trail R iders One frOID the Heart B y B ART NEWM A N PORTlAND, MI, SEPT. 10 he second Sunday in September is something spec ial in Michi gan 's Dis t ric t 14 motocross c ircles. T he Portland Tra il Riders hold a "Ra c e from the Heart" and proceeds from this event go to Mott's Chil dren 's Hospital. The b ig p urse money ($7000 , p lus $1000 in ho les h ot m oney ) brings in ride rs such as Nick We y , Josh Woo ds , Tyle r Ev a n s , Ra nd y Va lade and Tom my Ba rr o n . With 2 8 of the fastest 125cc Pros in the Midwest lining up for the start, it's a sight to see. Add in a $250 bounty for the holeshot , and the a ction gets even bette r. First out of the gate and leading the 125cc Pro pack through tum one was Derek Rose, on the Pa nic Rev ride. Rose crashed , passing the lead to Tech -Care rider Jason Mc Donald , who led for two strong laps before losing his lead to Evans , making th e running ord er E v a ns , McDonald , Woods, Da vid Ga ylord and Wey. By halfway , Evans and Woods had opened up a good-s ized lead on Mc Donald , who now had his ha nds full with lame duck Kawasaki rider We y . Evans flat landed his C R in a jump -filled rhythm sect ion , giv ing Woods the open ing he needed to move into the le ad . Woods d isposed of his goggl es on ce t h e pass was made, clearing his vision for a run to victo ry aboard his DGY/ Pro Circuit/ Lowe Raci ng KX. Th e two -lap board greeted Woods on t he next goaro und . We y was now in second . Eva n s slowed, letting Ba rro n move into third , and the order rema ined the same to the chec kered flag . T 64 O CTOBER 25, 2000' IC U IC I e Strategies c ha nged in moto two . All the top dogs lined up inside, looking for dry dirt a nd the ho leshot. This time it went to Ba rron , with Valade, McDon ald . We y, Woods and Evans in tow . Barron led for a lap , but th en disaster struck when his m otor went south . We y was now the point man , bu t Woods had his s ights set on the lea d , and a lap late r Woods passed Wey on th e uphill to take the lead fo r good. Evans qu ickl y moved up to pa ss McD onald and Va lade before a s o il sampl e relegated him ba c k to fifth . With Woods out front with a comfortable lead, the race was between Wey, Valade , Evans and McDonald. Evans was on the move, overtaking McDon ald and Valade - onl y to ha ve We y kick it up a not ch , hold ing on to sec o nd beh ind Woods . With less than a lap to go , Evans pu sh ed his way back to the rear of We y' s Kawa sak i and d ived inside for the pass with just three co rners to go . The pla n worked , as he found the opening he was looking for , but it set him up off the tra ck for the next set of jum p s, and he would be docked a pos ition , ending up third , behind Woods and Wey. In the first 250cc Pro moto , Mark Cheza was out front at the start, nabbing the holeshot. Cheza's glory was sh ort-lived, and soon Evans was th e leader , bu t he had his hands full with Woods. On lap four, Woods made the pass when Evans went completely sideways in the slick hard-pack. Woods put his head down and let his blue -collar riding style and work eth ic do the talk ing. Evans looked content with sec ond; after all, it was moto one, and he had a lead on Wey . With less than two laps to go , Woods stuck his front wheel into a soft berm while entering the Chevy Trucks straightaway, park ing himself and letting Evans ta ke the win. Woods was u p and going in tim e to hold Wey off for second. Moto two was a sequel of sorts , as another fast old guy, Todd Stewart, was the first rider throug h tum on e , riding a CR500 -powered CR250. Not new n e 'IV S to the game, Stewa rt got what he came for and let the kids go to work . One rider who wasn't that happy about following the monster through turn one was Woods; Stewart had done a number on the young lad 's gog gles, mak ing them us eless , and they hung on the handlebars from tum th ree on . Eva ns , Valade and Wey did their best to match Wood s ' speed tum for tum , but Woods was not to be denied. Evans was second and Wey was th ird . In th e e nd, Woods took the win , riding half-blind after 25 minutes with no goggles. After the final moto of the day , a ra y of sunshine broke through t he clouds just as the Portland T rai l Ride rs made it's th ird ann ual dona tion of $ 10 ,00 0 to t he Univ e rs ity of Michi ga n's Mott' s Children's Hos pita l. eN Portland T Riders rail Portland, Michigan Results: September 10, ZDDD 50 JR S HAFT : 1.
