Thain was out fro nt and looked to have th e race won, but King was on the move, and he passed Beatty and Israel on th e fifth lap to m ove into seco nd . With fou r laps to go , the New Zeal a nder chased down Tha in. With a lap to go, they battl ed for the lead , a nd finally, as the pack lofted into the air off the Ledge, o nly one co me r awa y fro m th e fin ish , Thain wa s still in th e lead , but as th e pa ck drop ped back into the infield, King came down th e la st st raight fi rst , Harrin gton was second , Israe l w as th ird , Beatty was fo urth , and Tu pa rounded out the top fi ve. A fter th e race, the KTM rid ers raced back over to th e Ledge , where Th ain lay on th e ground with a badl y bruised leg and s ho ulder. When th e gate dropp ed for the second moto, B e att y a bs co nded w i th anoth er hole sh ot , B ac on wa s sec o nd and Tup a wa s third. Beatty began to pull a lead over Bacon , wh o h ad a li ne of rac er s ri gh t beh ind him . Tupa got around him at the end of the second lap , and Kin g soo n fo llow ed into thi rd . Tu pa began to reel in Beatty, but King wa s reelin g in both riders, and he rod e his 125 into sec- ond, a hea d of T u pa . With o nly t hree la ps remaini ng , King pulled a sizable margin over Beatty at the finish. Israe l was third. Tup a was fourth. an d the high-flying Harringto n rounde d out the top five.
