Northrup rode his second National Championship bike. a 750cc "Hondasaki" triple built by Bart O 'Brien. to the win in the 750cc class . His 4.404-second time in the first round would have been good enough for the win. but he attacked the hill full force in the second round trying for the fast time, com ing up a bit sho rt with an excellent 4.224 -second time - good for the class win, but not for the overall fast ti me. Novices Bryan Lutz and Matth ew Dudash quic kly joined the lead gro up as Murphy took an off-track excursion . Kleinman and Hermann battle d fo r the lead , as Eric Byington stuck his wheel into third dur ing the first· lap shuffli ng. As th e race p rog ressed . Kleinman ste ppe d it up , leavi ng Herm ann to ci rcu late in a lo nely seco nd place . Lutz began to asse rt himself, cli m bing past Byingt on into third place and com pleting th e firs t m oto' s finish ing order of Kle in ma n, H er ~ m ann . Lutz and Byi ngton . In th e second half . Herm ann got the jump on Luu , Byin gton and Kleinman, who quic kly fou ght hi s way into seco nd and set out after Hermann.
