At th e end of th e firs t lap, th e t op two h eld th eir p os iti on s, with Kimble and Be rgamono movi ng up to third a nd fo urth and Gene "S o n ny " Nighman moving u p to fifth. Nighma n quickly passed Be rga mono for fo urth just before the start of la p two . Kim ble wen t down in the who op sect ion tow ard t h e end of lap two and dro pped ou t of the top five. The top five were n o w Jackso n , Hug hs on, Nigh m a n, Berg am o n o and Butle r. Hu gh s o n closed the gap o n the le a d er, J a cks on , by the start of la p thr ee a nd made the pass for the le ad a long t he tree line at the back of the ra c ec ou rs e . Nea r the end of la p two , J a c kson c ra s hed just before the new do ub le jump tha t follo ws th e sta rt a nd d id n o t fi n is h .
