Saturda y nigh t's 2 5 0c c Pro rac e was the do m ain of Yama ha- mounte d Armstrong, who was m aki ng a local appearance after chas ing across the c o u n tr y on th e National circuit for most of t h e las t two se aso ns . The Chaparra l/ AI pi nesta rs/ Bridgesto ne/ U ni -sponsored A rm str ong faced a chal lenge from Scott/ D irt D ig it s/Tho r backed Tiearney, especially earl y on , and T iearney fi nished second to A rm strong ea ch time out on the 250s. Third ov erall went to Justin Mastalka , wh o w ent 5-3 t o ea rn a good pa y check fo r the rac e. Ho nda riders Matt Kn ight (4 -5) and Ma tt Knesek (6 -4) parlayed consistent m oto scores into fourth and fifth overall , respectively . "T he purse was to o good to pass up - I just had to make this event," said A rm stron g . " I fel t good on the trac k rig ht away and j ust kept thi nk ing about earn ing some good coi n fo r a change." "I 'm happy with second on the 250," said T iearney . "The 125 is m y stronger class , so I'm fe eling c onfi dent for the rest of the racing ." Ind eed , Tiearney did triumph in th e 125c c contest with a clean sweep of the m otos. Armstrong on ly went 5 -4 fo r th e da y , but this d idn 't m ean N 38 O C TO B ER 4 , 2000' e y e I In add itio n to th e m oto cross rac ing , th ere was a n ex ci ti ng h al ft ime exhi bi ti o n of freest y le m oto cr os s in t he J a c k p ot F oodM art F r e e s t y l e Mo tocross J ump-off Contest. Bu t th e re al ke y to T iea rney ' s domina ti on of the 125cc Pro rac e was his mastery of the track's m ost d iffi cul t obstacle. " I ju st ne ed t o get a good st a r t again and I can bea t h im on the 250, too," said T iearn ey c onfidentl y. Of cou rse , Armstrong had other ideas. "In the 125cc class, I was riding a borrowed bike , and it lost t h e rear brake partway through the last moto, so I wasn 't able to give Nathan a run for first," said Armstro ng . "I' m also a lot b i g g er [p hysically ], so I h av e a disadv ant age on the 125 s. I'll let him win th e 125cc cla ss, but in th e 250c c race , it'll be diff erent.
