American Classic Racing Vintage Motocross Series Round 6: Hurricane Hills MX Napolitano Evolves as a Winner B y B O B V IN C E NT CUFFORD, PA, JULY 29 h e s ix t h race of th e IO - ro und Am erican Classic Racing Vintage ·Mo to c ro s s S eries wa s ru n at Hurrica ne Hills , on a dry track . Veteran riders in th e No rth east Vintage S eries found this unusual ; fo r th e last three ye a rs, ea ch Vintage e vent at Hurric a n e Hill s h a s be en a mud fest. Though mud riding is c e rtainly a part of motocross , thi s has left riders feel ing as tho ug h the y had never re a lly had the opportun ity to use th is track to its full poten tia l. This ye ar , t hat fu ll potent ia l wa s re alize d . Th e E v ol u ti on c la s s is r a p idly .. . well , evolvi ng in the Vint ag e motocross scene. It is a practical wa y of includi ng ma chines in Vintage ra c ing that previously had no rea l classi fication for comp et itio n . Evo lut ion m otor c ycles are those that fall somewhere between the early limited- trav el m o t o c ro s s e rs of the 1960s and ' 7 0 s a nd the monoshock , wate r cooled bike s of today. Th is year, th e racing in th e Evolu t ion ( 0 -2 0 0cc) c las s has b e en T 50 S EPTEMB ER 27 . 2000' cue I inten s e . Ke n Na po lita no had t ak en his Suzuki to the overa ll win in a ll five previou s eve n ts, but t hat d o esn 't mean he's ha d it e a s y . Tom France has consistently pressured Napolitano with his fou r-stroke Honda , a nd Vincent Scaonapieco a nd Ric k Ro s s eter have both scored m o to wins . Th er e never seems to be more than a bike length or two separating th e top four or five riders in each race. The moto s at Hurri cane Hills were no ex ception . In the first Evo lut ion (0- 200cc ). moto , Napolita no took t h e in si de t ra c k to the ho leshot a n d a n ea rly lead , bu t Rosseter was not goi ng to let him get away . Rosseter ha s com plained tha t h is Ya m a h a le a v e s something to be desi red when it comes to raw horsepower , which puts him a t a disa dvantage in try ing fo r th e holes hot. Ho we ver , h is s moot h and fluid riding s ty le allowed h im to gain ground stea d ily th roughout th e moto . By the thi rd la p , Rossete r was so cl o s e to Na p oli t a no that he was b r e a t hing pur e Suz uki exhaust. Fr an c e a nd J a son Lion were vy ing for t hi rd close beh ind , but the ra ce for firs t came do wn to Napolitano and Rosseter. Lau n c hin g o ver the front t ab le to p , Ro s seter land ed with h is fro nt whe e l ahead o f Napolitano 's . Th is a llowed him to ta ke th e inside into the ne xt corner, pushing Napoli tano outside a nd taking the lead. On the fina l lap , it looked as if the s e two were tied together with a short rope , but Napol itano c o u ld not make th e pass , and Rosseter to ok the check e re d flag in one of th e best match ra c es of the ye a r. As it c a m e t im e for t h e second rnoto , the spectators were pre pa ring to wat ch a re play of the first. As th e pack em e rg ed from the start and into the first stra ight, however, Rosseter was now here to be seen. Then , ha lf a la p lat er , h e flew by th e view ing stands - appare nt ly Rosseter h a d someh ow missed the start of the se c ond mote , arrivi ng at the gates as the pack negotiated the dou bles hal f a lap ahead . Rossete r rode like a man possessed. He threw ca utio n to the wi n d, and obstacles became mere bumps in the track . Without a doubt, Rosseter turn ed in th e fastest laps of the day in t his s econd moto, but it w as not enough to ov e rc o m e the huge defi cit. Rosseter fever ishly wo rk e d through the m iddl e of the pa ck to finish fifth , for second overall, wh ile Napoli tano 's second holeshot a nd s mooth mastery of the track was never threatene d in this second moto . Fra nce's 4 -2 finishes gave him third place overall. CN Hurricane Hills MX Clifford, Pennsylvania Results : July 29, 2000 (Round & of 10J PRE·1965 500 INT : I. Ron Wahl (BSA) . PRE-1970 250 INT : 1.
