STEP 5 STEP B Now is th e easy part. Get out the j et k it and the in structi ons th at go wi th it. Follow the instructions, and this part w ill be eas y. Most jet k its include replacement part s for the needle j ets , ma in jets, and, in th e ca se of the R6, m ain ai r jet co rrectors - sometimes th ey have new throttle-slide sprin gs as well . Remove the covers to the vacu um sli des, being careful not to lose any sm all gaskets or 0 rings. You will be reusing the throttle -sl ide sp rings, so don't d iscard them. Working o n one carb at a time, fli p th e carbs over and remove the flo at bowl. Locate th e m ain jet, and rem ov e it .(see belo w ) Inst all the rec o m m ended j et - in the c ase of our R6, it was a 142 ma in. Reinstall the bowl. Be ca reful tha t the rubber gasket aligns p roperly so that yo ur bow ls wo n't leak. Remove the slide from the carb , and the n remove the need les from th e slides by squeezing th e pla st ic arrows tog eth er. Then slowly push t h need le j et up and ou t . Foll ow th e instructions in the k it and install the e -cli p in the re commend ed groove . (In th is ca se, we insta ll ed it in th e fifth groov e fro m the top .) Then pla c e two wash er s abo ve the e-c1ip and ins ta I th e new need le back in the' slide. Be very careful rein st alling the needl so that everything aligns properly. The washers sit loosel y o n to p of th e cli p, so m ak e sur e they are in place. Put the spring back in and screw th e cover ba ck on . DO ONE CARB AT A T ME. Next yo u will need to adj ust the fuel-mixture screws . These are located on the bottom of the float bowls. (see below) They are usuall y seal ed from the factory , by a plug - fo r the sake of em issions. If they are, take tlie drill bit provided, and ve ry ca refully dr ill a ho le into the plug, until you barely punch through . T hen take tne woo d screw provided, and lightl y screw it in and then p u I the plug out. Once the p lug is removed, turn the fuel mixture screw all the way in un til it is lightly seated (clockwise ) . Then , in th e ca se of the R6, back it out th ree turns . On c e aga in , working on one carb at a tim e, remove the velocity stack, an a . Io c at e th e ma in air-jet. (see below ) You will be in sta lling an air-jet correct o r . Insert the ai r -corrector fl at si de down , then ta ke the sp ecial tool p ro vid ed and lightly t ap the corrector into the main air je t un til th e tops of each are flush . Rein- _ I_ . 'i-_ _ '!"'_-'! _ sta ll the velocity stacks . Either way , we wo ul d suggest taking Now yo u are finished fettling wi th the carbs . Reinstall them and hook all of the cables and hoses back u p . Tighten the intake manifold collars. Reinstall the airbox , and make sure yo u hook all of the hose ba ck up . Put t he tank back o n b y in st a llin g t he back pivot bolt firs t. T he n ho o k th e fuel line and breather ho ses ba ck up . TURN THE PET C O C K BA C K ON. Bolt the front t ank bo lt s on. Yo u are fin ished. If it doesn't st art, chec k th e petcock fi rst . th e b ik e to a shop with a Dyno , and doing a coup le of runs t o see if the bi ke is runn ing properly - for rea l. It may seem lik e it' s r un ning ok , b ut w ith the aid of the dyno you ca n opti m ize it , so that it wi ll ca rbu ret perfectly. Th e number -on e thin g tha t yo u w ill get out of some time on th e Dyno is o ptimal th rottle resp on se thro ugh o ut th e r e v range. It 's a n ad d ed ex pe n se , but w ell worth it.
