Even By BLAKE CONNER First things first, you either need to have a basic understanding of motorcycle design, have the shop manual , or both . If you haven 't worked on your bike before, the shop manual will save you at least an hour. Most Japanese bikes are very similar in basic des ign , so if you have worked on a Honda , a Yamaha isn't going to all t he tools you will need handy. If if you aren't the best mechanic , this ket exhaust pipe on your ca rbureted job isn 't really that hard . It just motorcycle, and the bike isn't running as crisply as it was , you most likely requires that you are good at follow ing directions, and have the proper need to install a jet kit. We installed the jet kit on our 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6 , but the basic procedures apply to most bikes out there. The job will most likely take about an hour to an hour and a half. STEP 1 STEP 3 Remove th e fuel tank - noting where the breather hoses and the fuel line attach , and then unhook them . The R6 has a hidden petcock on the bottom right of the ta nk, be sure to turn this off. If you have an old tire lying around , it makes a great p lace to set your tan k down , which w ill protect it from getting scra tched and the pe tcock from getting bent. Removing the carbs is the single hardest part of the job. It takes a little patience, combined with a knowledge of where the A llen-head bo lts reside on the collars that secure the ca rbs to the int ak e ma nifolds. On the R6 , the bo lts are v irtually hidden betwee n eacf carb and have to be accessed from the front of the carbs - you will need a flashlight. (see below) Th e exception is the #4 c ar5 (riders right) , whi ch c an be accessed through the frame side-cover. A ft er you Have loosened -up all of t he bolts that secure the carbs to the in take ma ni fo ld s, unhook the th rottle cab les an d toe choke c abl e.. T hen unhook the coo lant hoses th at are routed througfi the carbs . have a ra g re ad y , because coolant will come streaming out. • 34 SEPTEMBER 27 , 2000' cue • e n e vv s
