Th e first reg ul ar heat sa w Sh awn Cla rk jump int o the lead , but Hac k er was soon in control and pulling awa y . Will Davis took second on his back-up bike, with Kenny Cool beth grabbin g the sp ot severa l times before settling into th ird. H eat tw o fe at u r ed tw o excell en t ra ces. Geo Ro ed er and Johnny M ur p hree bat tled spectacularly for the lead, wh ile Chris Evans and Chris Hart put on ju st as good a show for the last transfer s p o t. Murph r ee c ame away w ith a hard-earned w in in a cl ose fin ish with Roeder. Hart forced Eva ns into a couple of mistakes and eam ed his way into hi s first GNC m ain. Rich King and Kevin Varne s blasted to the front of heat th ree. Varnes pres su red K ing for about two laps, before the fac tory rid er pu lled to a convinci ng wi n. Kin gs 1a -lap time was eas ily the fastest of the night. Vames race was far from over as J oe Kopp challenged from the halfway point on. Both riders were ex cha ng ing lines and positio ns, b ut Varnes ended in second . K evin A th er t on appea red to hav e the last heat wr ap ped up before being run do wn by Ni ck y Hay den. Th e partti me team m ates batt led back and forth until Hayd en took ove r on la p eight. Athert on 's Gardn er racin g t ea m ma t e for th e n igh t , St ev e Beatti e, h eid off J ess Roeder and T erry Poovey for the last tra nsfer . Shawn Clark go t the holeshot in the fi rst sem i, but it was red flagged when Yu hiko Hirao pitched his Suzuki awa y in tum thr ee. Hirao returned to the pits under his own power, but was unabl e to restart . Ricky Winsett nail ed the seco nd start o ver George Richtmeyer. Willie McCoy soon put an end to that, tak ing the lead on lap th ree. Winsett held on to be the seco nd rookie in the m ain . Terry Poov ey ran away with the second sem i, leaving John Nickens to duel with Chris Evans for the last tick et to th e m ai n. T he Larcom-N ickens Racing /K&N /Saddl em en -b ack ed Nickens pulled to a soli d second . Mike Varn es left J ess Roeder to fend off Rob Will iams for the lon e remaining advancem ent. T he Las Vegas H-D/ Roeder H-D -sp on sored Roeder prevailed to make his second m ain of the year.
