WML AMA Nationals Round 5: Broome-TIoga Sports Center Patterson Takes the Crown B v S T E VEN B O N N A U BINGHAMTON, NY, AUG. 26 t the final round of the WM L AMA Nation al s, as so on as the gate dropped for the first A mate ur moto , Campbe llsport , Wisconsin's Taba tha M i ll er took t h e lead, fo llowed b y Tamra Madd en , Ta rrah Johnso n. Jessic a Fost er and J esse D avis. Mill er led th e ent ire eigh t-lap moto and took the win in her fir st WML/AMA-sanctioned event. The real battle was for second. as Madden and J ohnson ke pt the fa ns on the edges of th eir seats. Madden held on for second, ty ing with John son for th e overall season champ i onsh ip . John son was third . Ch eryl McCull ough rec o ve red from a first turn cra sh to round out the top fi ve. J o hnson st ol e t h e second -m ot o holeshot, fo llowed by Madden. Miller, D av is and McCullough. Madden ke pt Johnson in her sig hts; knowing th at th e w inner o f t h i s m oto woul d ta k e the champion ship . As the two ba ttl ed for the championship, Miller reeled them in and on lap four she ove rtook Mad den for second. Mi ller the n im mediately attached he rself to J oh nson 's rear fender. The ba tt le lasted the remainder of the m oto, and o n th e white-flag lap, Mill er t oo k th e lead - o nly t o lose it agai n tw o co rne rs later. Mi ller made a ch arge through th e last corner , bu t Johnson edged her o ut by les s than half a bike length fo r th e win. Madden was never more than thr ee bike lengths behind th e l ea de rs until halfwa y throug h th e l ast l ap, wh en her b ik e puked . e n di n g h er c ha nce s atthe championship. McCullough rebounded from a poor start and passed two riders on the last two laps to take th ird . Davis held on for fourth. and Fo ster took fifth . The first Pro moto holeshot went to J ess ica Patterson , with Stefy Bau , Sarah Wh itm o re , Aubr i an a Dunn , Angie Keuntj es and J ack i Hudson in tow . Whitmore easily w o n the moto . Bau held on for second , w ith Keun tj es taki ng thi rd . Dunn , Huds on an d Sheena Patterson had a rea l ba ttl e for fourth. Du nn had broken her nose less th an an hour earlier in practi ce while attem pt ed t he hug e downhill t ripl e. but she hel d strong and took fo urt h . Hud son was a cl ose fift h, and Sheena Patters on t ook six th. Jessica Patter son m anaged to salvag e some po ints by placing 13th, but this set the stage for an exciting second m oto , with only 10 points separating Jessi ca and Keuntjes for the series championsh ip . Bau was first off the li n e in moto two, followed by Ke untjes, Dunn, J ess ica Patte r son , B onn i e W a rch a nd Wh it m or e. Patt erson br oke her toe in moto one , b ut she wa s on th e m o ve early and before the end of lap one she was in second and all ove r Bau , tak ing over th e lead on lap tw o. Keuntjes was th ird, fo llowed by Sh eena Patt er son . who had mad e a couple of qu ick passes. Bau retook th e lead on lap six. Jessica Patterson put her pain aside and started rid ing an absolutely phenomenal pace. She m oved around Bau fo r th e lead and never looked back . Meanwh ile, Sh eena Patterson ba t tl ed Hudson. who moved around Pat t erson , but Patterson wou ldn 't give up the position with out a fi g ht. Sh een a put a whee l o n Hudson in several different co rn ers but couldn 't ma k e th e pa ss on Hudson . Tann er ' s 23 - point card gave h im th ird overall and sec o nd AA; Neff was fo urth overa ll and third A A at the end of th e 8 6 -g round m ile eve nt. No ta bly a bse nt f ro m today 's compet i tio n was Vall ey Mot orsports' J err y Mado re, who was bu sy ea rn ing his wo rk cre dit by serv ing as co-tra il boss with fell ow Tri Sta te T rail Rider T im Dinge. In a cha nge from p ast years, th e eve nt 's start led right into an 18 -mph woods sec tion. On ly McEach ern and Cayer co u ld " zero" th e 10 -mi le sec - T t i o n , w i th T a n n er a nd K T M /Cl iff Cycles-sponsored Nei l Denn ett drop ping tw o apiece. McEa ch ern separat ed himself from th e pa ck in th e next sect io n , losing 3: 54 in th e sho rt , 4 mile section ru n at 24 m ph. Denne tt, Cayer. Neff, Tanner, Anthony Gera c i and Steve Anton iou all foll ow ed wi th four and change each . M cEa chern , T ann er, Neff a n d CRE tE-line-sponsor ed Raffi Peterson set the pace at c heck six , dropp ing on ly three po ints in the section, which included an " A and B r iders only" sp lit. Afte r the offic ial gas s t op , McEa chern really dropped the ha m m er, losing onl y I: 12 in a fast 5 -mile section. Cayer sne ak ed in under the wir e wi t h I : 5 9. f ollow ed b y Neff ( 2:1 4) and Tanner (2:54) . While the C riders called it quits fo r the d ay aft er this section , the A and B riders had to forge ahead .
