Atkinso n led t o the bottom of the back hill but drifted wide in a multibermed right -hand corner, letting Harasmisz and Gardner d ive under. Harasm isz led for a lap and a ha lf befo re Gardner capital ized on a m istake b y Harasmisz in a hair p in and to ok co m ma n d. As in t he first moto, Sil va ro le and Schmidt pulled o ut to a large lead. Ellington ro de in third, with Hig gins close behind in fo urth . Schm idt was all over Silva role, loo k in g for a way into t he lead and th e o ve ra ll for th e day , but o n t he sta rt of lap three, as th ey passed th e tower into a fast, sweepi ng turn , Schm idt got si deways tr y in g a lin e under Sil va rol e and we nt down , putting him out of con t enti on.
