JULY 28 Cu rr ent Northern California Sp eedway point s leader Bobby "The Blaze" Hedde n thrilled the fan s with an im p ressi ve dual m ain -even t sweep , co m ing from behind to win the Handicap ma in and th en topping th e Scratch main with a very close s te rt- to- fin ts b win o ve r " B ro nc o" Billy Janniro. Bart Bast and Mike Faria . Chris Kerr took his th ird straight sec o nd -division m a in -even t wi n , Bruce B ak er won the th ir d -d iv isio n ma in fo r the second ti m e th is season , J .J . Ma rtynse ended B ry an Yar row 's three -week rei g n as D ivi sion O ne cham pion, an d Danny Easley took his seco nd consecutive Ju nior D-2 v ic tory . Paul Johnson m ade an im pr essi ve ru n in his co me-from behi nd Junio r D ivisio n Th ree wi n ov er Pete King and Chris Smith. Wh en the Handicap m ain li ned up on the tra ck , it seemed current J unio r U.S. Nati ona l Speedway Cha m p io n E ri c Carrillo, who wa s m ak ing his initi al 50 0cc Div ision One sta rt at Fast Friday s , would be very tou g h to ca tch from his zero-yerdaqe starting lane . The 16 yea r -o ld ' s closest com peti to rs were Ian Ferris and Robert Curry, on the 30 . On the 50 were Faria, J anni ro and Hedden. Carrillo 's rear tire sp un off the line at the sta rt, but du e to his trem endo us starting advantage he still eas ily led the first lap . He dden was the first backya rdage vetera n to m ove up , and j ust afte r the end of the fi rst lap he m oved arou nd Fe rri s. Hedden immed iat ely wen t to work on Curry on lap two but fou nd the goi ng a bit risky. Up front . Carrillo still had a de cent lead and looked on the way to his very first Handi- ca p main victory . but once Hedden got hold of the runn er-up spot, he set hi s sigh t s o n the leader and. t hroug h th e next three la ps, he closed th e gap until he was right on Carrillo' s tail. Tho ugh Carrillo didn't make an y mistakes th rough the last turns , he co uld only watch as Hedd en stol e victory with a perfectl y ex ecuted last -turn outside pass that brought the crowd to it s f eet in a ppreciation . Hedden's half -a bike-length Ha ndi cap main w in was his th ird of the se a so n a boa rd his Peterich Cycle/Off Beat/Wa rn o ck/Ara i J awa . Carrillo wa s sec o nd, third w ent t o Janniro, and Faria wa s fourth. The Sp eedway gods were smiling on Hedde n; he wo uld be starting fro m the ins ide in the Scra tc h m ai n. Ba st drew lane t wo , Janniro wa s starting from three, and Fari a was in four . Fa ria was fir st off the lin e, but all three riders in sid e him ga ted almost as we ll and he had nowh er e to go and f ound himself tr ail in g in fou rth as they ran close together dow n the back straightaway . Hed den had a frag ile lead at best. with J anniro and Bas t close on the insid e and Faria try ing to sweep around the outsid e. Lap aft er lap, all fo ur stayed within a couple of b ike lengths of each oth er. Janniro wa s box ed in b y Faria , wh o remai ned cl o se but co ul dn't move ah ead .
