The 16 -yea r-ol d topped both th e 125cc a nd 250 cc Intermediate classes. In the first 125c c Intermediate moto , Magoo Ch a nd le r/ Gold en State Cycle/ AMP/Pro Action-ba ck ed Tommy Jea n a bsconded with the hol eshot u p th e steep start, with Brent Nichols and Nick Cali in tow. At the co nclusion of lap one , Ca li di ved to th e ins id e o f Nich ol s around the right-hand sweeper and drifted wide , driving Nichols off the track and cla im ing s e c ond . Up front, J e an had established a co mfortable lead . The ma n on th e m o ve wa s Spark s , Ne va da ' s Eva ns , who was re c ov e ring from an ave rag e sta rt. At the checke rs, Evan s had worked his way up to second, with J ean taki ng the comforta ble win. "I have to g et a bette r s ta rt ne xt rn o t o , " s a id th e li k abl e Ev ans . He rip ped off a second- place start a nd wa s in the lead by th e conclusion of lap one . J ean d idn 't fa re so we ll, comi ng dow n the hill in sixth . Mea nwh ile , up fro nt, Evans put the hammer d o wn , try in g t o d istan c e himself from th e fie ld , but 14 -yearo ld Nic k Jarret wa s hang ing tough , and he s ta ye d with Evans th e e nt ire m oto . E van s took th e win a nd th e ov e ra ll, follo wed by Jarret a nd Cal i. Th e 250cc Intermediate class was a barn -burner, with Evans a nd 20-yea rold Wa rren Tittlemier battling for the overall. In moto o ne , T ittl em ier had the e a rly lea d . Evans wa s fifth. Eva ns 1J bega n to m ount a method ical c ha rge a nd wo rked h is way up to Tittlern ie r's rea r wheel. Eva ns then ma de his mov e in the bac k se ctio n of the track to ta ke the lead a nd the eve nt ua l win, with T it tlem ier on his rea r whee l. Moto two proved to be one of the most exci ting motos of the weekend. The overall wa s up for grabs . At th e d rop o f th e g ate, YZ- mou nted T im La s t er sec u re d t he lea d, with T it tle mier in s e c ond and E va n s way back in six th . Eva ns kne w he had to win the moto to get the o ve rall , a nd h e m oun t ed an other La Ro c c o - lik e c ha rge . By midm ot o , amazi n gly, (Abo ve) T o ny Eva n s (661 topp ed the 125cc a nd 250cc Intermediate classes at the second annual Mammoth Mountain Limited event i n M a mmoth Lakes. Ca l iforn ia . (Abovel Tommy Jean (61 1) l e ads Brent Nichol s (5 15 ). Nick Ca li (12 6) and eventual overall w inner Evans (6 6) e n route to winning t h e f irst 125cc Intermediate moto. He placed t hird overall. (Ri g ht ) Andy Grider (7) grabbed the 250cc Pro holeshot on the way to second overall, behind M ike Mason. Eva ns had worked his way up to a nd past TittJemier, but th is tim e TittJem ie r wa s not lett ing him get aw a y . With two laps to go, Titt lemier wa s all over Eva ns , showing him a wheel in eve ry tu rn ; the two exc hanged blow s on a couple of occas ions . Just a few tu rns from th e finish , T itt lem ier wa s trying everything he could to get around , but he c o uld not make th e pass . At the c heckers, it was Eva ns with th e overall a nd Tittlemier as runner-up. In th e 80cc ( 12 - 13 ) contest, ProVa Ive / W is eco / Hin s on /Twist ed ba cked Dane Jackson put together a 2 - 1 tall y for th e o ve ra ll victo ry .
