Wh ee l-A-W ay Motorsports W eekend of Champions Froze n Ocean Moto rs ports Complex AUBURN, NY, AUG. 19ยท20 ~ rock Sellards of Oh io e asily took iii home the big money from the Wheel -A-Wa y We ekend of Champ ions a t the Frozen Ocean Motorsports Co m plex . Sellards won his heat rac e a nd t he 250cc main at Sa turday 's Night of Champ ions supercross a nd to p ped th e 12 5cc Expe rt a nd 250cc O pe n Expe rt podiums on Su nday's Da y of Cha mpions m o to cross . Sellar ds rode to a p erfect I-I sc ore in th e 125cc Expert class bu t had to work harder fo r the ov era ll in th e 250cc class, c a rding a 1-2. Two heat ra c es we re run for both the 12 5cc a nd 250c c Expert classes on Satu rda y night, with the top eig ht riders of each adva nci ng to the m a in e vent. Th e top fou r riders from th e last-chance qua lifier rounded o ut the 20-rider gate . Aaron Diete r led th e first 125cc Ex p e rt heat ra ce until the la s t la p . Se lla rds gat ed poorly but picked off every ride r a nd finally Die te r by th e last la p . Sella rds a nd Diete r crossed the line in a class ic photo finish . Se lla rds was giv en th e offici al nod and the win, edging out Diete r by inches. Tom Kelly finis he d third . In the second hea t, Paul Carpenter na iled th e holes ho t and opened up a s ix- seco n d le ad by th e start of t he second lap , but he crashed and h ad to ra ce th e LCQ (w h ic h h e won ) . Kevin Cr ine cam e from fifth to win th e heat, with Barry Carsten finis hing second a nd David Hill th ird. Sellards won th e first 250cc Expe rt h e a t , with Cr in e s e co nd and Ca rlo Coen third . Ty Wall a c e won the second heat, with Aaron Da y second a nd Damien Plotts thir d . In the 15 -lap 12 5cc ma in , Kelly pilot ed his KX to the front of the 20rider field , with Ca rs te n , Crine, Sell ar ds and Wallace in tow. Ke lly kept the lea d until lap four, whe n Sella rds mad e the pass. On the following lap , Sellards, a ppa rently having bike problem s , dropped ba c k to fifth. Se llards managed to fix his problems and work his wa y bac k to sec ond by lap n ine . Ca rst en was now lead ing , with Se llards second , Walla ce th ird, Ke lly fourth a nd Crine fifth. Se llards' bike began s putt ering a ga in , a nd a gai n he d ropped back to fifth. Ca rsten regained the le ad and held it all the' wa y to the chec kers , going home $1200 richer. Sellards got his CR running agai n a nd work ed his wa y ba c k to second by the la s t lap. Coe n to o k the 25 0 c c ma in- e vent holeshot and led until th e third lap, when Crine passed h im for the lead. Round ing o ut the top five o n lap thre e were Sella rds , Coen , Wa llace a n d Travis Hodg es. Crine held the le a d for three laps until Se lla rds finally made th e pass. Eddie Arasimowicz was now th ird , Wa lla ce fourth a nd Coen fifth . Sellards t o o k the checkers with a good lead , followed by Cr ine , Wal lace, Diet e r and Ca rste n. O n S u n day , Co en s na tched t he h o le sh ot in th e fir st 25 0cc Op en Ex pe rt rnoto , fo llo we d by Sell a rd s , Walla ce , Stratton a nd Plotts . Sellar ds h ad th e p o int b y th e s e c on d lap . Stratton moved up to thi rd , a nd Plotts hel d fift h. Stratton m ana g ed to get a roun d Coen for second by la p three . Sellards finished the moto with a 12 second le ad , followed b y Walla ce, Stratton, Coen and Crine . Plott s nailed the second moto , with Hodges , Mike Mason, Co en and Stratton in tow. Plotts ' lead was 13 seconds by lap two. S tra tto n moved up to second, and Die te r moved up to fourth . On lap three , Die ter moved up to third, Se lla rds worked his way up to fourth after a poo r start, and Mike Mason pa sse d Coen for fifth . On lap fo ur, Co e n m o ve d ba c k up to fifth . Se lla rd s wo rked his wa y up to second by lap s ix of th e seven-lap mot o . Sellards d id his best to catc h Plotts but co uld on ly cut Plotts ' lead to 10 sec o nds by th e c heckers. Th e final order was Plotts , Sella rds, Dieter, Coen a nd Carsten. Se lla rds earned the to p spot on th e p odium w it h h is 1-2 sc o re, Plott s e a rned se cond o ve ra ll, a nd Coen wa s third . In Sunday's first 250cc Open Am a teu r rnoto , J effre y Slush e r na iled the I e n e vv s holeshot, with J o rdan J a c kson , Matt Hibbard. Tim Ha rris a nd Andy Masters tra iling . The top five quickly spread out. Jackson got close enough to pass Slusher on several occasions but just co uldn't m a ke it ha p pe n. Slusher held on for the moto win, with Hibbard, Ed Kulas and Mike Bamum in tow. Kul a s nail ed the s e cond -m oto hole shot. When the top five came off the two -story ta bletop, the running order was Sl ushe r, J a c kso n , Kula s , T ho mas Par d e e a n d J a s o n Lewis. Jackson had th e po int by lap th re e.
