that came in tum two , where Steffen slid wid e
wh ile Johnson drove up the inside. Ron Garci a
m ad e h is way into fou r th, d ro p p in g B y ron
Kuk la and Richard Fox each back a pos ilion.
Ste ffen's mistak e seemed to take the wind out
of his sa ils, a nd he dropped back to fourth ,
beh ind Johnso n , Reynold s and Garcia , at the
fi nish. Kukla and Fox trai led in fift h and sixth .
John Perez led th e 250cc Amateurs off the
line . but J ames Wo od soon took th e lead ,
ah ead of Perez, Gabe Slatton and Kuk la. Perez
went off the t rac k with an un kn own pro ble m,
leav ing Slatto n and Kuk la batt ling for seco nd,
Kukla tried to sli p in sid e Slatton in turn two ,
but both riders we re alm o st running in th e
golf-ba ll-sized rock s insi de th e rida ble groove.
Kuk la held a tig hter lin e com ing out of four to
stea l seco nd . but Wo od was too far out front
to c a tc h, W o od too k th e win b y J 0 bik e
lengths. Kukla held off Slatton for secon d. Ian
Fo ulds and Al ex Wood brought up the rear.

Thanks to a g reat eff ort by Ch arlie Ven egas
and Dukie Ermolenko, under the au spices of
CSC Promotions, speedway return ed to the
Ora nge Show in San Bernard ino in what ma ny
hop e w ill become a week ly event . Th e track
was built on th e inside of the asphalt oval used
by th e stoc k cars. Brad Ox ley of Internalional
Speedwa y and the Sh o e Man , K en Maely ,
helped out; Ma ely hoo k ed the drag to his truck
and Oxl ey got on th e blade and they tumed a
mighty rough surface in to an okay trac k , and
altho ug h it was not what m any had hoped for ,
it was a start .
The boy s from No rt hern Cali forni a ca m e
down to show the ir sup po rt , and it was their
night, as Billy J an niro and Jim Ferris cam e
away with th e Scratch and Handi cap m ain victories.
