AHRMA is certainly well- known for th eir Vintage series, bu t it wa s the modern half of the progra m that ha d th e la rge crowd pumpe d up. The m ost eagerly anticipated race of the program was the 10-lap Ba ttle of the ",:wins Form ula On e race , and it d id no t d isappoint. Cond itions were perfect. Nearly 40 riders - on a wide vari ety of machines in cl u di n g th e Apr ilia RSVIOOOR , the Honda RCS I, th e Suzuki TLI OOOR and the Ducat i 996 - lined up on th e grid . Defending c ha m pi o n Da v e Po d o ls k y g o t the holes ho t fro m po le position on h is Ap rilia Mille R, cl o se ly pursued b y Sc ott E va ns, on a Suzu k i TLR , and Du c a ti 748R -m ounted Paul Vital e . By the third lap, Podo ls ky still held a s lim lea d ove r Ev an s , wh ile Vital e challenged Evans for second. Vitale was able to slip past Evans , bu t he was unable to maintain his challenge a nd crashed , without injury, in turn three, the Keyhole . "I was t ryi ng to up the p re s s u re an d was lean ing on Podo ls ky in the Ke yh o le , " Vit a le la ter ex pla ined . "Unfo rt u n a t e ly, I lost the front a nd went down ." During this hectic action , August m a na ged to close up on the lea de rs , and the three of them circulated through lapped traffic , never more than a few bike lengths apart. It was easily the most inte resting battle on the track , with E vans a n d Augus t sh adow ing Podolsky, looking for a n oppo rtunity as t hey worked through traffic . Pod olsky 's Aprilia was com ing off the corners hard and showing a top-speed advantage down the back straight. Evans' Suzuki and August's Honda h ad to work harde r to keep up , their bikes twisting a nd squirm ing thr ough th e undulating cir cuit. Pod olsk y look ed as if on rails. On the last lap , Evans tr ied to muscle his Suzuki a ro u n d th e ou tsid e of Podo lsky in turn ei g ht , but he co u ld n 't squ e e ze pa st. Howe ve r, e t th e Carousel, th e next-to-last tu rn a t this c h a lle n gi ng circui t, Podo ls ky b lew the e ntra nce into t h e corner and Evans simp ly dro ve past to take the checkered flag , T 68 S EPTEM BER 13, 2000 ' cue Aug ust and Podolsky picked up the pace , dropping into th e m id -I :38s about one second faster than the previou s pa c e - Evans , running in third , wa s unable to sta y with them . August m a int ained h is le a d, with Podolsky tryi ng up th e inside o n th e e ntra nce to turn s ix on the white -flag la p, but August wou ldn 't g ive the position up . Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course: Chicken HawkRacing's David Podolsky (1 S) leads Scott Evans (71 4) and Paul Vitale (25X) at round 11 of the Progressive Suspens ion Historic Cup series In Lexington, Ohio. Right beh ind him , in thi rd pl a c e , wa s August, with Jonathan Gla efk e a lonely fourth on his Suzuki a nd Greg Nichols fifth on his Ducati. The Sou nd of Thunder c o nte s t promised the same level of ex citement a s t he p re c e d ing Tw ins ra c e . Ma ny of those who had raced ea rlier we re sched uled to compete in the Sound of Th under race, with the addi t ion of some heavily mod ified machines , due to t he na ture o f the rules : any s ingle - , tw in - o r tr ip le cylinder machine can run , and engine modifica tions a re permitted. When the flag dropped , defending c ha m pio n Gla efk e , this time a boa rd hi s Superbike T LI OOOR, fluffed the start, allowing August, Podo ls ky and Evans to get away from him in what loo ked like a repeat of the e a rlier Ba ttle of the Twins race .
